The Orioles committed 18 errors in their last 23 games before tonight. And that total didn't include plays that should have been made and were scored as hits.
Jake Arrieta and Nick Markakis were charged with errors in the fourth inning tonight, and the Red Sox reclaimed the lead 4-3.
Arrieta missed the bag after taking Derrek Lee's flip, allowing Josh Reddick to reach, though I swore that his heel nicked it. Jarrod Saltalamacchia followed with a single into right field, and Reddick took third base after Markakis bobbled the ball.
J.D. Drew bounced to Lee, who blocked the ball with his chest and recorded the out as Reddick scored.
The Red Sox had one hit in the inning and still produced the go-ahead run.
Jake Arrieta has thrown 80 pitches in four innings. He's been charged with three earned runs. A quality start is still within reach.
So is a victory if the Orioles can tighten up the defense.
Update: So much for a quality start. So much for going six innings.
Arrieta is done after 4 1/3. Adrian Gonzalez homered to extend Boston's lead to 5-3, and Arrieta departed after putting two runners on base.
Six hits, four walks, two home runs, 95 pitches.
Another Orioles starter is taxing the bullpen.
