Glendale did their part to reach the Arizona Fall League title game, stopping Peoria 3-1. The Desert Dogs (17-15) won seven of their last 10 games, finishing the fall season as the hottest team in the league.
But Surprise also won their final game to win the West division by a half-game. The Saguaros (17-14-1) face Mesa in Saturday's championship.
In the final game, five Nationals prospects got to play. Center Fielder Andrew Stevenson went 1-for-3 with a walk from the leadoff spot. Stevenson finished hitting .353 in 21 games with four doubles, two triples, two homers, nine stolen bases and 12 RBIs.
Third baseman Drew Ward went 1-for-3 with a walk as well, finishing the season hitting .309. In 21 games, Ward smacked 25 hits with six doubles and eight RBIs.
Three Nationals pitchers combined for 2 1/3 scoreless innings in the win: Jake Johansen (2.13 ERA), Nick Lee (1.54 ERA) and Ryan Brinley (2.53 ERA).
Also, right-hander Austin Voth (3-2, 5.16 ERA) finished the AFL with three consecutive wins. He received the best news of the year when the Nationals elevated him to the 40-man roster.
Shortstop Osvaldo Abreu finished the AFL hitting .267 in 16 games. He had three doubles, five stolen bases and eight RBIs.
Jonathan Mayo released his all-time fall All-Stars team, which included Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper, who played in Arizona in 2010 and 2011.
