Flaherty still formidable at Fenway Park (rain delay, O's down 7-1)

BOSTON - Ryan Flaherty dreamed of playing in Fenway Park while growing up in Maine.

Now he practically owns the place.

Getting another start at second base today, Flaherty doubled off the Green Monster in left field in the second inning to score Travis Snider and tie the game 1-1.

Snider led off with a triple, the ball scooting past center fielder Mookie Betts and rolling to the deepest part of the ballpark. Manny Machado lined to short, but Flaherty knotted the score.

Flaherty is 6-for-12 with two doubles and a home run in his last four games. He began today with a career .386/.435/.561 slash line in 57 at-bats at Fenway Park.

Flaherty also is 21-for-51 (.412) in 14 games against the Red Sox since April 20, 2014.

No wonder he's in the lineup again today against Boston right-hander Justin Masterson.

Left-hander Wei-Yin Chen surrendered an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning on David Ortiz's sacrifice fly that scored Betts, who singled, stole second base and took third on catcher Ryan Lavarnway's throwing error.

Chen retired the Red Sox in order in the second and has thrown 27 pitches.

Allen Craig has replaced Hanley Ramirez in left field in the bottom of the second. We're waiting for an explanation.

Update: The Red Sox took a 2-1 lead in the third inning when Chen misplayed Betts' comebacker and threw late to first base. Xander Bogaerts, who led off with a walk and moved to third on Ryan Hanigan's single, would have been an easy out at the plate.

The lead grew to 3-1 on a bases-loaded walk to Mike Napoli and 5-1 on Machado's error.

Machado failed to backhand Shane Victorino's grounder.

Chen issued four walks in the third, gave up a hit and committed an error. He's thrown 63 pitches and none of the runs off him are earned.

The Orioles have committed three errors in three innings - their first multi-error game of the season.

Rule 5 pick Jason Garcia was warming in the bullpen.

Update II: Chen failed to complete the fifth inning for the second time in three starts. He gave up five unearned runs and three hits in 4 1/3 innings, with five walks, three strikeouts and a hit batter. He threw 95 pitches, 54 for strikes. The five walks tie a career high.

Garcia, making his first appearance since April 10, retired both batters he faced to strand a runner, and the Orioles continue to trail 5-1 as the rain intensifies.

Orioles starters have gone 3 2/3, 5 1/3, five and 4 1/3 innings in this series.

Update III: Play has been stopped at 1:25 p.m. with the Orioles down 7-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Garcia gave up two runs in the sixth on Dustin Pedroia's RBI double and Craig's RBI single.
