NEW YORK - Hello from Citi Field, where the Mets host the Nationals in their home opener only one week after the Nats hosted the Mets in their home opener on South Capitol Street. It was a short night for the Metropolitans, who had a 6:05 p.m. game in Miami and didn't arrive back in New York until 2 a.m.
The Nationals are a bit more rested after taking the train up from D.C. following yesterday afternoon's wild win over the Phillies. They've also got some fresh blood on the roster: Howie Kendrick, who has been activated off the injured list. Kendrick was rehabbing from a hamstring strain suffered a month ago, but keep in mind this also is his return from the far more serious Achilles tendon rupture he suffered last May 19. This is a big deal for the veteran, and a big deal for the Nats bench.
The lineup features all the current regulars (including replacement shortstop Wilmer Difo). This group will try to enjoy some success against Noah Syndergaard five days after scoring four runs in six innings off the big righty. The Mets also get a second look at Stephen Strasburg, who gave up four early runs on Saturday but then settled in and retired 10 of the last 11 batters he faced.
