The Nationals didn't appear to suffer at all from jet lag last night in the first game of their first West Coast trip of the season. The bats were alive during an 8-5 win over the Padres that included home runs from Bryce Harper, Wilson Ramos and Anthony Rendon.
Whether all the late nights and travel catch up to them tonight remains to be seen. This much is certain: Joe Ross should be plenty motivated facing the organization that drafted and then traded him. Ross has pitched against the Padres before, allowing just one unearned run on two hits over six spectacular innings last August at Petco Park.
Left-hander Christian Friedrich starts for the Padres, and he's been a pleasant surprise since signing with them after three seasons pitching in Colorado with a 5.81 ERA. In six starts for San Diego so far, the 28-year-old has a 2.12 ERA, though he has walked a whopping 19 batters in 34 innings.
Ben Revere gets the night off today, with Michael A. Taylor starting in center field and leading off.
Just wanted to say thanks for all the kind words and well-wishes last night. The family medical situation that prevented me from making the trip to San Diego is improving, and for now I'm cautiously optimistic I'll be able to rejoin the club Monday in Los Angeles. In the meantime, I'll continue to have updates and analysis from home tonight and throughout the rest of the weekend ...
