Game 5 lineups: Nats vs. Phillies

Off-season free agent acquisition Aníbal Sánchez gets the call for his season debut in game two of the series against the Phillies this afternoon as the Nationals look to split the short series.

The right-hander went 5 1/3 innings against the Yankees in the March 25 exhibition, allowing two runs on two hits with four walks and four strikeouts. He threw 86 pitches, 47 for strikes in the 5-3 win.

Sánchez is 5-9 with a 4.50 ERA in 20 career starts against the Phillies. He has 94 strikeouts in 110 innings, with 54 walks. He is 97-100 in his career, with an overall 3.99 ERA. Sánchez went 7-6 with a 2.83 era in 24 starts for Atlanta in 2018.

What might be the toughest part for Sánchez today is that he has not pitched competitively in nine days. He will be opposed by Phillies veteran Aaron Nola, who went 3-1 with a 2.14 ERA in five starts against the Nats in 2018. He is 4-5 with a 3.59 ERA in 15 career starts against Washington. He already won his first game this season, allowing one run in six innings, surrendering only two hits and striking out eight in a 10-4 win over Atlanta on opening day.

The Nats will activate shortstop Adrián Sanchez from Triple-A Fresno and will place Trea Turner on injured list. Mike Rizzo confirmed the move to get Sanchez to D.C. this morning on Sports Radio 106.7 The Fan.

First baseman Ryan Zimmerman says losing Turner for a while will force the Nats to adjust.

Difo-Turns-Two-Red-v-SFG-sidebar.jpg"It's tough. Anytime you lose your starting shortstop for an extended period of time, especially a player as talented as Trea, it's just tough to swallow," Zimmerman said. "But the season doesn't stop for anybody, so just got to keep going. (Wilmer) Difo's capable of playing great shortstop, he did it when Trea broke his wrist, whatever year that was.

"So, we've got some guys capable to fill in, but you can't really replace a guy like Trea, so that's tough for us. But just to keep going, keep grinding along and, bottom line, we just have to play better. The good thing for us is it's the fourth game. The bad thing is we haven't played like we're capable. But tomorrow's a new day."

The Phillies' last regular season loss was September 28, 2018.
