Gausman fans 10; Wieters hits No. 100, Davis No. 200 as O's top Toronto

The offense finally came in support of Kevin Gausman. The right-hander had his strikeout pitch going and finally the Orioles backed him with a pair of home runs. Then they added to that.

Manny Machado and Chris Davis hit back-to-back homers in the last of the seventh, and Gausman pitched eight strong innings as the Orioles beat Toronto 8-1 in Game 2 of a doubleheader. The Blue Jays won 15-2 this afternoon in the opener to clinch the American League East title for the first time since 1993.

The game featured not only Gausman's strong outing, but Matt Wieters' 100th career homer and Davis' 200th career home run.

Facing a team full of Toronto reserves following the Jays' division-clinching victory, Gausman kept Toronto scoreless through four innings on 48 pitches and had fanned eight batters to tie his career-best by that point. Through the seventh, he had a shutout on 80 pitches with nine strikeouts.

He lost his shutout when Darwin Barney homered with two outs in the eighth. But over eight frames, he allowed five hits and the one run with no walks and a career-high 10 strikeouts. Gausman, who threw 98 pitches, is now 4-7 with an ERA of 4.25.

The game was scoreless in the seventh when Machado blasted a 2-2 pitch from Ryan Tepera over the wall in center. His 31st homer made it 1-0. Two pitches later, it was 2-0. Davis hit an 0-1 pitch out on a line drive to right-center field. It was his 44th home run. This was the sixth time the Orioles have hit back-to-back homers this year.

The homer was the 200th in Davis' career and his 158th with the Orioles. That tied him with Melvin Mora for 10th on the club's all-time homers list. The O's added three more runs in that inning on J.J. Hardy's RBI single and Nolan Reimold's two-run double. The five-run seventh inning matched the Orioles' total runs scored during the previous five games, all losses.

An inning later the O's added three runs and Davis hit No. 201, his 159th with the O's, which broke the tie with Mora. He homered leading off the inning, and two batters later, Wieters' two-run shot to right was his eighth on the year and No. 100 for his career. According to Statcast, Davis' homer in the eighth inning traveled 436 feet and Wieters hit his 414 feet. For Davis, this was his seventh multi-homer game of the season and the 14th of his career.

According to ESPN Stats and Info, the seven multi-homer games in one year ties the club record set by Jim Gentile in 1961, Frank Robinson in 1966 and Brady Anderson in 1996.

The Orioles improved to 77-81 with four games left. They are 43-31 at home and 7-11 versus the Blue Jays.

The Orioles and Toronto end this series on Thursday afternoon at 12:05 p.m. when Tyler Wilson (2-2, 3.60 ERA) faces left-hander David Price (17-5, 2.34 ERA).
