SARASOTA, Fla. - Kevin Gausman retired nine of the 10 Dominican Republic batters that he faced this afternoon, the only glitch a five-pitch walk to José Bautista leading off the top of the second inning. Add him to the list of Orioles pitchers who have completed three innings. He's the first to do it against such a formidable lineup.
Manny Machado grounded to third baseman Ryan Flaherty in the first inning and Welington Castillo flied to right fielder Seth Smith in the third.
Gausman's fastball hit 96 mph on multiple pitches. His secondary stuff became more reliable in the third, allowing him to get ahead of Gregory Polanco and retiring him on a ground ball.
Only Starling Marte, who lined to Hyun Soo Kim, and Castillo got the ball out of the infield. Nelson Cruz struck out on a 96 mph heater.
Logan Verrett replaced Gausman, who threw 24 of 43 pitches for strikes, in the fourth inning. Gausman has made two starts this spring and allowed one run and one hit in five innings.
Smith was 0-for-9 before his leadoff double against Samuel Deduno in the first. Mark Trumbo walked with two outs, but Kim flied to center.
Francisco Peña walked against Fernando Rodney with one out in the second, and the Orioles loaded the bases against Dellin Betances with one out in the third on a Smith walk, Robert Andino single and Chris Davis walk. Trumbo popped up, Enny Romero replaced Betances and Kim lined a two-run single into right field to give the Orioles a 2-0 lead.
Kim versus a left-hander is newsworthy in any game, especially after going 0-for-17 last season. Not sure we've seen it this spring before today.
Machado led off the fourth against Verrett and flied to deep left-center field.
Manager Buck Showalter enjoyed having Machado and Castillo back in camp, if only for part of the day.
"They (Dominican) asked for the weight room this morning at 8:30 and we gave it to them and the only one that was in there was Manny," Showalter said. "And Welington came by, so that was good to see."
Showalter walked through the back fields today before heading inside Ed Smith Stadium and saw J.J. Hardy performing more baseball activities.
"It was good to have him in stretching and throwing drills and everything today," Showalter said. "He's close. Ran the bases and got some swings. He'll be glad to get away from Richie (Bancells) in a lot of ways."
Outfielder Chris Dickerson probably won't play on Wednesday while trying to get the rest of the swelling out of his right foot.
"If it was during the season, he would be, but we're going to give him another day or so," Showalter said. "That ball he fouled off his foot/shin/ankle, he's getting some swelling in there after he plays, so we want to get rid of all that. During the season, he'd be a go, but we have some time here. I don't want him to get setback."
Reliever Logan Ondrusek gave up a two-run homer yesterday in Lakeland and showed up today with soreness in his right elbow.
"We don't have any tests scheduled right now, but we'll see how it feels in the next day or two," Showalter said. "I found out about it this morning. He came in and, as they put it, presented with some elbow discomfort. Whether he felt it yesterday or not, I haven't gotten to that point. I'm going to ask him that question."
