Gonzalez done after six innings (Dickerson with walk-off HR)

Another Orioles starter completed six innings tonight, the third to do so in the last nine games. Otherwise, it was a fairly disappointing night for Miguel Gonzalez, who was replaced by left-hander Troy Patton to begin the seventh. Gonzalez is charged with a season-high five earned runs and seven hits, with three walks, six strikeouts, two home runs and a wild pitch. He threw 105 pitches, matching his season high - 66 for strikes. Gonzalez still hasn't won since April 23 against the Blue Jays. He has a loss, three no-decisions and one trip to the disabled list. The Orioles will need to rally if Gonzalez is going to avoid another loss. Tigers starter Max Scherzer has retired 10 in a row since Adam Jones' two-run homer in the third inning. Patton had allowed nine runs and 13 hits in 8 2/3 innings over his last six appearances before tonight, and his 12 walks this season matched last year's total. Patton walked Miguel Cabrera with one out to top his 2012 output, and Prince Fielder reached on an infield hit on a scorching liner off first baseman Chris Davis' mitt. Left-handers were batting .333 against Patton going into the game. Tack on another hit, though Davis had a shot at it. Victor Martinez struck out, and manager Buck Showalter summoned Steve Johnson from the bullpen. Jhonny Peralta flied to center field to keep the deficit at two runs. Patton had allowed runs in four straight appearances and five of six before getting through the seventh inning unscathed. Down on the farm, catcher Taylor Teagarden singled in the sixth inning for his first hit in his first injury rehab game at Triple-A Norfolk. Update: Scherzer retired the last 16 batters he faced. He passed the baton to closer Jose Valverde, who dropped it on his foot. Nick Markakis led off the bottom of the ninth with a home run. Adam Jones reached on an infield hit and Chris Davis lined a single into right field to put runners on the corners with no outs. Matt Wieters popped up for the first out and J.J. Hardy flied to shallow left field for the second. Chris Dickerson stepped to the plate, in his first start since May 23, and hit a three-run walk-off home run to give the Orioles a 7-5 victory. That's Dickerson's first career walk-off home run, and he got a face full of shaving cream for the effort. Markakis has seven home runs this season. He also has hits in 19 of his last 21 games. Jones had three of the Orioles' first five hits. Brian Matusz retired all five batters he faced and Darren O'Day induced a ground ball from Cabrera for the final out in the top of the ninth, but the Orioles couldn't muster any offense after Jones' home run until Valverde entered the game. Scherzer's 10 strikeouts are the most against the Orioles this season. CC Sabathia struck out nine on April 12. Manny Machado went 0-for-4, lining out to left-center field in his final at-bat.
