Guthrie on the loss and Davis on the homer

In the quiet of the Orioles' clubhouse after another one-run loss on this homestand - the club's fifth since last Friday - Jeremy Guthrie talked about Detroit's five-run rally against him in the sixth inning tonight. "I kept making the pitches that we were trying to do, but they were able to put some good swings on it and were able to string together a good rally," Guthrie said as Detroit scored five after there were two outs and none on. "I thought a portion of them (his pitches then) were executed well, but some caught a lot of the plate as well. "Each hitter, you erase the previous one and try to make your pitches. They were real aggressive there, a couple of first-pitch hits and they did a nice job," he said after Detroit's 6-5 win. "I can say I gave it my all the whole time. Never once feared the worst. There was never a sense of 'here we go again.' It just didn't work out today." The Orioles have now lost seven of nine games on this homestand and are 9-20 since the All-Star break. "It's difficult. We had chances to win the game and for whatever reason were not able to close it out." Now with a record of 5-16 and ERA of 4.55 after giving up 16 earned runs his last three starts in 19 2/3 innings, Guthrie was asked if he is concerned he might have a 20-loss season. "No, you can't fear that. I haven't even thought about that. If you execute pitches you can go on a nice streak and win games and so that's what I've tried to do every fifth day. Make good pitches and try to win a game," he said. Meanwhile, Blake Davis talked about his first major league homer, a three-run shot that just made it into the left field stands in the second inning.

"I had no idea (if it was out), I just saw the guy jump and it looked like it hit his glove, that's why I kept running around the bases. I didn't know until after they checked the video and the umpires made it official. It was pretty awesome, pretty exciting," Davis said after his two-hit, three-RBI night. But it came during another loss as the Orioles fell to 28-35 at home and 45-72 on the season. "It's tough. They're a good team, in first place. It's tough, just have to try and get a win tomorrow," Davis said. While the Orioles are 0-5 in one-run games on this homestand, Detroit has won eight one-run games in a row to set a club record. That breaks the mark of seven straight set in July of 1944.
