Guthrie's outing spoiled by late homer as the losing streak reaches five

For the Orioles, this was one of the most frustrating losses of the year. On a night when Jeremy Guthrie outpitched former Orioles lefty Erik Bedard for most of the game, one key error and one bad pitch cost him the game as the Mariners beat the Orioles 3-2 to take the first two games of the series in Seattle. The O's took a 2-0 lead to the last of the eighth and Guthrie got the first two outs. But Ichiro Suzuki reached when Guthrie was charged with an error in taking a throw from first baseman Luke Scott. After a single put two runners on, Justin Smoak hit a three-run homer to right to ruin the Orioles' night.

One bad pitch cost Guthrie a win, as he falls to 2-7 with an ERA of 3.24. On the night, he gave up just five hits and the three runs were unearned. He walked one and fanned nine, throwing 111 pitches. The Orioles are 0-5 on this road trip and have scored just 13 runs with a team average of .213 in Oakland and Seattle. They have just five extra-base hits and are 6-for-38 on the trip with runners in scoring position. The Orioles tied a season high in falling to five games under .500 at 24-29. They were also five under at 14-19 and 19-24. Bedard gave up two runs over 6 1/3 in a no decision and was replaced by former Oriole Chris Ray, who got the win. Seattle improves to 28-26 and has won 11 of its last 13 games. The O's scored in the sixth when Robert Andino drew a walk, went to third on Adam Jones' single and scored on a Nick Markakis double-play grounder. A Matt Wieters homer to right off Bedard in the seventh gave the Orioles a 2-0 edge. It was Wieters' fifth homer but first since April 29. He had gone 94 at-bats with a homer. The Orioles now have followed a five-game win streak with five consecutive losses. They will need to win Wednesday afternoon when Brian Matusz makes his season debut to avoid a winless six-game road trip. Worth noting: This was Guthrie's second eight-inning complete game of the season. He went eight and lost 3-0 to Tampa on May 13. Guthrie threw first-pitch strikes to 20 of 31 hitters. Guthrie has now pitched eight innings three times and has had a start without allowing an earned run four times. Over his last three starts he has given up just four earned runs and pitched to an ERA of 1.64. Vlad Guerrero is 0-for-8 since his 14-game batting streak ended as his average has dipped to .289. Nick Markakis is 2-for-16 over his last four games. He has now gone 14 games and 60 at bats since his last extra-base hit on May 15. Seattle has won five in a row and eight of its last ten games against the Orioles at Safeco Field. Seattle is now 20-11 over its last 31 games. Bedard entered this outing with a record of 3-0 and 1.09 ERA over his last five starts. He had a stretch of 20 consecutive scoreless innings end when the Orioles scored against him in the sixth inning. Adam Jones returned to the starting lineup and went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. He is now batting .555 (10-for-18) this year vs. his former Mariners team with two doubles, a triple and 5 RBIs.
