He didn't get a no-hitter tonight but Jason Hammel pitched the Orioles' first one-hitter since September 28, 2006 when Daniel Cabrera did that at New York. He pitched the O's to a 5-0 win at Atlanta to even the weekend series at one win each.
Hammel took a no-hitter into the seventh and walked Dan Uggla with two outs to snap a stretch of retiring 17 batters in a row. Then Jason Heyward singled to left to end the no-hit bid and put runners on the corners. Hammel got out of that jam by getting Eric Hinske to fly out.
This is the Orioles' first complete-game shutout since Brad Bergesen tossed one on the road against Tampa Bay on May 14, 2011. It's the O's first one-hit shutout since Mike Mussina pitched one on August 1, 2000.
Hammel walked two and fanned eight, throwing 103 pitches, 65 for strikes, in his second career complete game and first shutout in 128 career starts. He is now 7-2 with an ERA of 2.87.
Hammel entered this outing with a career mark of 0-3 and ERA of 9.00 in five starts against Atlanta. But he pitched a gem as the Orioles improved to 10-3 in his starts on the year. He has allowed two earned runs or less in nine of those games.
Atlanta starter Brandon Beachy retired the first 11 O's hitters he faced tonight but then left the game after issuing a two-out walk to Chris Davis in the fourth. Beachy had some elbow soreness a few days ago and the discomfort resurfaced tonight. Anthony Varvaro came on for him.
Varvaro then walked the next two hitters before Mark Reynolds delivered a bases-loaded, two-run single on an 0-2 pitch. Reynolds has 11 RBIs in 17 games since coming off the disabled list.
Brian Roberts gave the Orioles a 3-0 lead with an RBI single in the fifth and he added a two-run single two innings later to make it 5-0. He finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
With the win, the Orioles improve to 38-27 and stay within a game and a half of the Yankees, who beat Washington today. The Orioles have won six of the last seven and are 9-4 over the last 13 games.
