Hardy robbed again (we're tied)

Last year, Angels center field Mike Trout scaled the fence in right-center field - see what I did there? - to rob Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy of a home run in the first inning. Tonight, Angels center fielder Peter Bourjos scaled the fence in center field to rob Hardy of a home run in the first inning. Hardy might want to try pulling the ball or aiming at the out-of-town scoreboard in right. Hardy almost gave Orioles starter Miguel Gonzalez a 2-0 lead, but Bourjos brought back an apparent home run. We'll find out later whether that play influences the outcome of tonight's game. Hardy was 4-for-13 against Jason Vargas before the at-bat. He's hitting third again tonight with a left-hander on the mound. Manny Machado, who had singled with one out, was picked off first base by catcher Chris Iannetta. Machado extended his hitting streak to nine games. He now has 88 hits this season, two fewer than the Tigers' Miguel Cabrera, who leads the majors. Gonzalez threw 11 pitches in the first inning, eight for strikes. Machado made a diving stop and throw to retire Trout, and center fielder Adam Jones ran down a long fly ball from Josh Hamilton. Gonzalez needed only 10 pitches to complete the second, though he allowed a one-out single to Howie Kendrick on a looping ball that barely eluded second baseman Ryan Flaherty. Erick Aybar lined into a double play. Speaking of Flaherty, who plays second base tonight if he's injured? Would manager Buck Showalter insert Alexi Casilla, who couldn't attempt more than one throw today because of pain in his right index finger? Or would Danny Valencia make his debut at the position? Chris Davis ended an 0-for-16 slump with an infield hit in the bottom of the second inning, though MASN replays showed that Vargas beat him to the bag. Word out of Boston is that the Red Sox likely will start Felix Doubront, Ryan Dempster, John Lackey and Clay Buchholz in the four-game series at Camden Yards that begins Thursday night. Down on the farm, Triple-A Indianapolis' Brett Carroll hit a grand slam off Norfolk's Tsuyoshi Wada in the first inning. Wada allowed two hits, walked two and struck out two while falling behind 4-0. Update: Trout broke the scoreless tie tonight with a leadoff home run in the top of the fourth inning. Hardy was robbed again in the bottom of the fourth, this time by an Angels fan who reached over the fence in foul territory to interfere with a ball that Trout was attempting to catch. Wada lasted only 1 1/3 innings tonight, allowing eight runs (seven earned) and six hits, walking two and striking out two. He threw 49 pitches, 33 for strikes. In six starts over 24 1/3 innings, Wada has allowed 26 runs (22 earned) and 33 hits, with 13 walks, 20 strikeouts and three home runs. His injury-rehab assignment ends Saturday and he has to give his consent to be optioned. Update II: Vargas finally gave up a run against the Orioles. He notched 14 scoreless innings against them this season before Ryan Flaherty singled leading off the bottom of the sixth, Nick Markakis doubled and Manny Machado directed an RBI grounder to second. Orioles 1, Angels 1 Markakis reached third base with one out, but he was stranded. Vargas had retired 11 of 12 before Flaherty's single. Flaherty was 0-for-4 vs. left-handers this season. He's starting tonight because of Alexi Casilla's sore right index finger. And now we have a scoring change. Credit Markakis with a single, and he advances to second base on Bourjos' error.
