I am looking forward to a trip to Ripken Stadium tonight to check in on the IronBirds and also to watch Michael Gonzalez make his 7th injury rehab appearance.
Gonzalez is expected to pitch in relief tonight vs. the Lowell Spinners, a Red Sox affiliate.
Gonzalez has pitched to an ERA of 4.27 in six games with the GCL O's, Aberdeen and Bowie. Over 6 1/3 innings he has allowed seven hits and three runs with no walks, seven strikeouts and two homers.
Meanwhile, the IronBirds are 8-10 and have scored a total of 28 runs in winning three of their last four.
They have scored 83 runs on the year and Aberdeen's team average of .276 is second best in the league. The Birds 4.12 ERA is 9th in the New York-Penn League.
Aberdeen set a franchise record with 19 hits Monday in a 9-6 win over Lowell at Ripken Stadium. Kipp Schutz and Mike Rooney had four hits each in that win.
Schutz, a 19th-round pick in the 2009 draft out of Indiana, is the league's leading hitter right now batting .403 through 16 games. The lefty-hitting left fielder is 8 for 13 over his past three games.
Schutz is third in the league in hits and slugging and fourth in total bases.
Second baseman Omar Casamayor is 5th in the league with an average of .362 and is batting .429 over his past seven games.
This year's fourth-round pick, Auburn outfielder Trent Mummey is batting .333-1-4 in ten games. He is 8 for 14 over his last three games.
Check back often for updates on the IronBirds and Gonzalez's appearance at Aberdeen.
