Orioles place Hicks on injured list with hamstring strain (plus notes and lineup)

PHILADELPHIA – The Orioles have put outfielder Aaron Hicks on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain and recalled Triple-A Norfolk outfielder Ryan McKenna.

Hicks was removed from last night’s game with hamstring cramping after diving for a fly ball. He underwent testing to determine whether he had a strain.

Cedric Mullins is on the injured list with a right adductor groin strain, and Hicks joins him after batting .252/.349/.435 with four doubles, a triple, six home runs and 20 RBIs in 42 games since the Orioles signed him on May 30.

McKenna batted .253/.315/.392 in 62 games with the Orioles. He’s hitting .217/.294/.500 with two doubles, a triple and three home runs in 12 games with Norfolk.

Colton Cowser could start in center field tonight against Phillies right-hander Taijuan Walker.

Cowser’s RBI double last night in the ninth inning was his first extra-base hit in the majors.

* Kyle Gibson is back in Philly to face his former team.

Gibson spent 1 ½ seasons with the Phillies, appearing in the 2022 World Series, before signing a one-year, $10 million deal with the Orioles. He’s made 10 quality starts and is 9-6 with a 4.76 ERA and 1.355 WHIP in 21 games.

Gibson’s 124 hits allowed are tied with Kansas City’s Brady Singer for most in the American League.

Nick Castellanos is 10-for-43 (.233) with three doubles and two home runs against Gibson.

Walker is 11-4 with a 4.11 ERA and 1.258 WHIP in 20 starts after signing a four-year, $72 million contract in December. He registered a 1.50 ERA and 0.889 WHIP in six starts in June, and has a 5.00 ERA and 1.389 WHIP in three starts this month.

Walker has a 2.76 ERA and 1.041 WHIP in nine home starts, and a 5.25 ERA and 1.440 WHIP in 11 road starts.

The Orioles have faced Walker eight times in his career. He’s 4-1 with a 2.45 ERA and 1.091 WHIP in 44 innings.

Kyle Schwarber has posted a .512 average and hit 10 of his 26 home runs on the first pitch, per STATS.

Trea Turner batted .296 against off-speed pitches last season but is hitting .192 this year.

* DL Hall tossed a scoreless and hitless inning today in the Florida Complex League. He walked a batter and struck out two.

Hall was in Sarasota on a program to build strength and regain his velocity.

* Pitcher Kyle Brnovich, recovered from Tommy John surgery, has joined Double-A Bowie on his injury rehab assignment.
