Orioles reliever Dillon Tate fell yesterday in his apartment and landed on the injured list.
Tate "had an unfortunate accident where he tripped in his apartment yesterday," manager Brandon Hyde said during a Zoom conference call with the media.
The accident occurred on the team's off-day. Tate came down on his hand and sprained his right pinky finger, and he's scheduled to undergo an MRI later today.
The Orioles reinstated reliever Shawn Armstrong from the injured list as Tate's replacement in the bullpen.
Infielder Ramón UrÃas was recalled from the alternate camp site to provide infield depth while José Iglesias remains day-to-day after being hit by a fastball Saturday on his right wrist.
"Just adding another infielder because Iggy's wrist is sore and not sure when he's going to be able to get out there," Hyde said.
"He feels a lot better today. It's showing improvement. We're hoping to get him out there in the next couple of days. We don't know at this point."
The taxi squad for the road trip includes pitchers David Hess and Branden Kline, catcher Austin Wynns, infielder Andrew Velazquez and outfielder Ryan McKenna.
Keegan Akin is starting tonight and Hyde will decide whether to give the rookie one more outing on Sunday.
"He's going to pitch today and then we'll go from there," Hyde said.
Ellicott City resident Bruce Zimmermann will be available in the bullpen for the Red Sox series. Hyde is figuring out how to get the left-hander into a second major league game, with Sunday's season finale in Buffalo a possibility.
"As of right now he's going to pitch out of the bullpen," Hyde said. "I'll try to find him a spot where I can give him some bullpen innings. Still a little bit undecided on that last day, so we'll see."
The bullpen lost right-hander Carson Fulmer yesterday. The Pirates claimed him off waivers.
"Carson threw the ball really well for us," Hyde said. "That was just a roster decision and I wish him the best of luck. He's a great guy and he did a nice job for us while he was here."
Hyde began his media session by expressing his joy at the news that Trey Mancini completed his final chemotherapy treatment yesterday in Baltimore.
"Somebody we care about obviously immensely and it's so great to hear how well he's doing and can't wait to see him soon," Hyde said.
