If O's get Darren O'Day, the offseason will be off to a solid start

NASHVILLE - As an anxious fan base waits to see how this offseason will develop for the Orioles, dare we say it is off to a good start?

The Orioles have a Plan B at first base with the addition of Mark Trumbo. It looks like two of their six free agents will be back with the team at a time when we saw predictions that the Orioles would go 0-for-6 there. Matt Wieters took the qualifying offer and will return, and Darren O'Day has reportedly agreed to terms. Although as we learned yesterday, through both O'Day's Twitter account and Dan Duquette's comments, there is more work to do on that one.

But re-signing O'Day would keep the Orioles bullpen - a big strength in 2015 - quite formidable. While we wait to see what rotation upgrades the team will make, it doesn't hurt to go with a five-and-four plan. Know your starter will give you at least five innings (you sure hope for more) and then lock down the last four frames. With Zach Britton, O'Day, Brad Brach and Mychal Givens, the Orioles have the back half of that well covered.

O'Day-sidebar.pngRe-signing O'Day would represent a nice get for the Orioles, who, you may know, are not often the team that wins the bidding for a sought-after player. They had some advantages here and that likely helped get the deal this far. Now we'll see if they get it to the finish line.

Under the terms of a four-year contract for $31 million, O'Day would match free agent relievers Andrew Miller and David Robertson from last winter in getting a four-year deal. Paying $7.75 million per season for a non-closer is obviously pricey. But O'Day is a player worth going that extra mile for and the Orioles seem willing to do that. They may have won what came down to a Baltimore-Washington battle at the end. Again, this deal is not done. If it gets done, the Orioles made the right move and a good one.

Now we'll see starting today if this week in Nashville really gets interesting with the club still pursuing a starter, a reliever, an outfielder and possibly another first baseman. Trumbo gives them a player that can be plugged in at first, the outfield or DH. His pickup means if Chris Davis wants to wait for weeks to sign, the Orioles don't have to wait on him.

There are a lot of possible directions for them to go. Let's see what is up next for the Orioles.
