If you think four homers is impressive, what about six?

A four-homer game is pretty impressive. Josh Hamilton did that last night at Camden Yards. A six-homer game is not bad, either. That happened in the college ranks 13 years ago today and there are some similarities between the two players that hammered all those longballs. Josh Hamilton hit four homers on May 8, 2012 in Baltimore. Marshall McDougall hit six homers on May 9, 1999 in College Park, Md. In the same state where Hamilton hit four last night, McDougall of the Florida State Seminoles hit six on this date in 1999, leading his team to a 26-2 win over the Maryland Terrapins. McDougall's six homers, 16 RBIs and 25 total bases from that game are all NCAA Divsion I records that still stand. So both Hamilton and McDougall came to Maryland to make history. Both have played for the Texas Rangers. And neither player actually took on-field batting practice the day of his feat. McDougall singled in the first inning of that game and then homered in the second, fourth, sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings. Yes, he accomplished that - just not against major league pitchers and with an aluminum bat. But no other college player before or since has ever had six homers and 16 RBIs in one game. Kind of amazing to think it happened almost on the exact same spot on the calender as Hamilton's game. McDougall is now 33 and still playing in the Mexican League. He was drafted in round nine by Oakland in 2000 and got 18 big league at-bats with Texas in 2005. Here is video of the six homers with commentary from legendary Seminoles coach Mike Martin. It's at this point, when I mention coach Martin, that I never seem to fail to mention that I was the radio broadcaster for the Seminoles in 2005 and 2006. It was one of the most amazing baseball experiences of my life, getting to be a part of a big-time college baseball program that is so well-run with such great fans as Florida State and I'll never forget my time in Tallahassee. I remember when everyone there found out I was from Maryland they couldn't wait to tell me about the amazing day McDougall had at Maryland in 1999.
