Is there pressure on the Orioles to match moves by other AL East teams?

SAN DIEGO - It was interesting to hear executive vice president Dan Duquette suggest the Orioles are more likely to acquire an outfielder right now via free agency rather than through a trade. I don't think that ends any rumors about the club's possible pursuit of Matt Kemp or Justin Upton, but that seems unlikely at this moment. "I think there is real pressure in terms of the standings," Law said. "If you just are looking at the teams on paper - and I recognize Baltimore has outperformed what they've been on paper for several years in a row now, but still - they are going to need to do something to replace the offense they lost. "I think they have to be able to stay somewhat on par with the other teams in the division, which probably means adding a bat, maybe two by the end of the offseason." The Orioles won the American League East by 12 games last season. Have the other teams already closed the gap? "No, I think they are closer," Law said. "I don't think I'd put any of those teams on paper ahead of Baltimore. But you know they are not done. "You know the Blue Jays are looking for another starter. Boston may be looking for two starters at this point. I still think the Yankees are going to make some significant move. They should with the rotation. There has to be something, we are not going to have an offseason where the Yankees choose not to spend money. That is inconceivable. Any of those teams could leapfrog the Orioles, again on paper, with one more move." O's manager Buck Showalter will meet with reporters at the Winter Meetings today at 4:30 PST. When I interviewed MLB Network's Harold Reynolds yesterday, he threw a bunch of praise Showalter's way. "He makes a big difference and I think a manager can make all the difference in the world," Reynolds said. "I played for managers that made my career. Dick Williams turned me into an All-Star player by challenging me every day. "Buck is one of the best. I've watched his personality change. He's allowing the players to be themselves a little bit more, but he's still got that tight rein of understand how you win games."
