Jordan sizes up day two of the draft

On day two of the First-Year Player Draft, the Orioles selected 28 players, completing rounds two through 30. Of the O's 29 picks to date, 15 are pitchers and 14 position players with 20 of the 29 selections being college products. A few moments ago, O's scouting director Joe Jordan talked about the second day of the draft with reporters here in the Camden Yards press box. "It was a good day. We got a lot of guys we targeted and, like every year, that's what you try to do. Had a couple of guys that fell to us that we are very happy about, starting with (pitcher) Dan Klein, our first pick today. It was a long, grueling, try-to-stay-focused day. "I need a little time to go over and absorb it and see how much money I'm going to spend, but it was a good day, I'm happy." Jordan talked about the right-hander Klein from UCLA, the O's third-round pick and 85th overall selection. He was a closer for UCLA this year, going 5-0, 2.23 with 9 saves and 46 strikeouts in 40 innings. This was the second time the O's drafted Klein after taking him out of high school in round 24 three years ago. "We had him evaluated in high school exactly where we have him now as far as what we feel like he's going to be. At that time, the money was pretty significant and we didn't get it done. "This year he was dominant for them at the end of the game. We don't see him as a guy that's going to be a closer, we like him as starter. He's 6'4", he's got size and just a durable-type body." The Orioles had Klein rated as a second-round pick. "We didn't expect him to be there. It's one of those things, it happens every year and hopefully we are closer to right than maybe the industry, we'll see," Jordan said. The O's feel they can sign Klein pretty quickly and get him to a team this summer but later this week his UCLA team will play in the college baseball Super Regionals and they can't get too much going with the player until his season ends. In round four, the Orioles selected outfielder Trent Mummey from Auburn with the 118th overall selection. "This is a kid that had a broken fibula the first part of the season. Over the last two months, 150 at bats or so, he hit 18 home runs. He's a Lenny Dykstra type of guy as far as his stature and his build. "Very competitive, I talked the other day about the type of player we are looking for in terms of makeup and being competitive. He fits it to a tee. We really got a guy in the fourth round that we wanted. That part of it was very attractive to us." Jordan said the O's drafted some players that he would expect to get over-slot contracts. "We are going to be involved in that. After I leave here, I'll go back and try to absorb what we did and put a approximate dollar figure on it, preliminary budget and kind of see where I'm at. We took on some things similar to last year in some ways," he said. Jordan said "it could take some time to get it done" about signing his fifth-round pick, high school infielder Connor Narron, the son of a former O's coach. But he is confident that Narron "will play this summer." He also said sixth-round pick, pitcher Dixon Anderson of Cal-Berkely fell to that round due to his expected contract demands. Anderson has a fastball that has been clocked in the mid 90's and what Jordan called a "power sinker." The O's so far have taken: *3 lefty pitchers *12 right handers *5 catchers *2 third baseman *3 shortstops *4 outfielders The draft concludes tomorrow starting at Noon with rounds 31 through 50.
