Leftovers for lunch (Frederick rained out)

Not as good as the Chinese food in my fridge - a cold egg roll is one of my favorites - but give it a try.

As expected, Manny Machado will serve as the designated hitter tonight at Single-A Frederick before the Orioles re-evaluate him and the possibility of activating him from the disabled list for the Pirates series.

Double- A Bowie right-hander Tyler Wilson has been named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week. Wilson's award comes one week after Baysox first baseman Christian Walker was named Player of the Week.

I detect a trend.

Wilson went 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA and 18 strikeouts over 12 innings and two starts. He surrendered 11 hits and walked four batters.

Overall this season, Wilson is 4-0 with a 2.76 ERA and 36 strikeouts over five starts and 29 1/3 innings. The University of Virginia product leads the league in wins and is second in strikeouts.

Walker is getting noticed by the Orioles for his blazing start. He's an intriguing prospect. But he's not viewed as a potential replacement for Chris Davis. It's too soon.

Manager Buck Showalter checked out some video last week of left-hander Travis Seabrooke, the 18-year-old lefty from Ontario taken in the fifth round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft. Seabrooke is at extended spring training after allowing one earned run in eight innings last summer in the Gulf Coast League.

"Pretty interesting," Showalter said. "He was a good pick there, boy. That's a big hairy left-hander. And he signed quick."

Staying in the minors, Showalter also talked up infielder Buck Britton, the older brother of left-hander Zach Britton. Showalter kept bringing him to major league camp this spring and again had him on the roster for both split-squad games, as he did in 2013.

Britton currently is batting .356/.394/.515 with four doubles, four homers and 14 RBIs in 23 games at Bowie. He can play every infield position and the outfield.

The Orioles may need to make room for him at Triple-A Norfolk.

"Oh, believe me, he's on the radar," Showalter said. "He's a good player. I brought him over. He was just about in big league camp is the way I looked at it. Buck can play a lot of places and he's a threat offensively."

Reliever Brad Brach, acquired from the Padres over the winter for minor league pitcher Devin Jones, has 24 strikeouts in 11 innings at Norfolk.

Brach was among the final cuts in spring training. He'll get to Camden Yards later this summer.

"Brach's been really good," Showalter said. "He had one little hiccup in a 10:30 game after a night game, so they threw that out. He's throwing the ball well. He's got a chance to really help us. I like him."

Showalter made the following observation this weekend about Nick Markakis, who is finally healthy and in better condition than the past few seasons:

"Nick's starting to run better. He's running better than I've seen him in a year or two. He's moving around. I think Nick feels good. The one thing he's always done is post up. He plays. He takes a lot of pride in it."

Center fielder Adam Jones was asked yesterday about the botched rundown between first and second, when Markakis lobbed a throw over Steve Lombardozzi's head.

"Hey, I think mistakes are going to happen," he said. "As long as you made the mistakes aggressively, live with them. We live with our mistakes. We live with our success. You can't be high when you do good and be low when you do bad. You've got to be on an even keel.

"Mistakes do happen. Just got to try and prevent them and eliminate them."

Asked to assess the first month of the season, Miguel Gonzalez offered up the following:

"I think there are a lot of positives. Starters are going a little deeper now. I'm happy about that. Kind of get our relievers to get a little bit more rest, and that's our goal. And we're going to keep fighting and I think we're in a good spot."

Update: Frederick was rained out, meaning Machado didn't get a chance to play in a rehab game tonight.
