Looking three months into the future (Cabrera agrees to deal with Rays, per report)

A little over three months from now (three months and a week, to be exact), the Nationals will open their 2015 regular season at home against the Mets.

It'll be a 4:05 p.m. contest on a Monday afternoon. Bolt work a couple of hours early and bundle up.

There is still a good bit to be decided before then when it comes to the construction of the Nats roster.

Who will play second base? Who will take up the last couple of spots in the bullpen? How will the five bench spots be handled? Will any of the soon-to-be free agents - Jordan Zimmermann, Ian Desmond, Doug Fister, Tyler Clippard or Denard Span - no longer be a part of the Nationals organization?

While there are lots of questions that we can ask, however, there is a lot that we already know, possible injuries notwithstanding.

Assuming he isn't traded, Span will lead off. Ryan Zimmerman is expected to be fully healthy and slotted in as the everyday first baseman. Jayson Werth will move to left field. Bryce Harper will play right, and manager Matt Williams has also indicated that Harper will likely move up in the batting order, probably hitting in the heart of the lineup.

So what will the Nats' opening day lineup look like? Well, it's hard to say now, given that we don't know who will play second and where Harper will end up hitting. Things also could change depending on spring training performances.

But, hey, let's give it a shot now. Below is my opening day lineup prediction, and feel free to disagree (respectfully, of course), and leave your own prediction in the comments section.

Could Harper hit fifth and Zimmerman be written into the cleanup spot? It's certainly possible. Could Ramos be moved higher up in the order? Sure. He did hit cleanup on opening day 2014, after all. Could Zimmermann end up getting the opening day nod on the mound? Yup.

But given what we saw last season and how things are shaping up so far this offseason, that's how I think it might look. Things could change, of course, but that's what I've got as of the second-to-last day of 2014.

Update: According to a report from FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, Asdrubal Cabrera has agreed to a contract with the Rays, pending a physical.

The Nationals acquired Cabrera in a trade with the Indians just before the non-waiver trade deadline this year, and he became the team's everyday second baseman down the stretch. General manager Mike Rizzo kept up light contact with Cabrera's agent this offseason, but the Nationals were apparently not heavily interested in bringing Cabrera back for 2015 (and possibly, beyond).

You have to wonder whether this signing will make the Rays more likely to trade second baseman/outfielder Ben Zobrist, who could make for a solid addition for the Nats. Zobrist is only under contract for one more season and will make $7.5 million in 2015, but he's posted at least a 5.4 WAR in each of the last four seasons and is a versatile, proven player who switch-hits.
