Lots of activity in first inning, as O's take 3-1 lead (with Ripken quote)

Jake Arrieta threw 29 pitches in the top of the first inning, and the Indians pieced together three singles to take a 1-0 lead. It didn't last long, but more on that later. Michael Brantley recorded the RBI after Shin-Soo Choo and Jason Kipnis reached base. Brian Roberts reached on Casey Kotchman's error in the bottom of the first, but his slump grew to 4-for-35. Roberts moved up on a wild pitch, took third on Xavier Avery's grounder and scored on shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera's error. Roberts scored his first run in 12 games. The Orioles were 0-for-2 with runners in scoring position, extending their streak to 3-for-54 and 6-for-65. But Adam Jones reached on an infield hit, moving J.J. Hardy to second, and Wilson Betemit doubled off the right-field fence to give the Orioles a 2-1 lead. Yes, that's a hit with RISP. It happens. Betemit extended his hitting streak to nine games. He's 20-for-38 in his last 13 games. The lead grew to 3-1 on Chris Davis' grounder to third. Davis is in a 1-for-31 slump, but he'll take the RBI, his 32nd this season. The Orioles were 1-for-5 with RISP in the inning. All three runs off Derek Lowe were unearned. Lowe threw 33 pitches. Before tonight, the Orioles hadn't scored more than two runs in eight of their last 10 games. Meanwhile, Derek Jeter passed Cal Ripken Jr. tonight for sole possession of 13th place on the all-time hits list with 3,185. The Orioles just passed along the following statement from Ripken: "Congratulations to Derek on passing me on the all-time hits list. Derek has been such a special player for such a long time and I am happy to see him continue to play at a high level. He represents the game and the Yankees wonderfully and I hope that he continues to play and continues to give all of us baseball fans great memories."
