Mancini first Oriole to homer for first two hits, but O's lose to Sox

Trey Mancini made some Orioles history tonight and he got his team right back in this game as well. They got even, but could not go ahead, as the Red Sox beat the Orioles 5-3 to complete a four-game sweep in front of 26,788 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Detroit beat Minnesota earlier today and is leading its game with the Twins tonight. A Tigers win in the nightcap would put them past the Orioles in the American League's second wild card spot.

The Orioles fall to 82-71 for the season and to 2-6 on this 11-game homestand. Boston improved to 89-64 and has won eight in a row and 16 of 21 games. The Red Sox completed their first four-game sweep in Baltimore since Sept. 20-23, 2002.

Boston has completed back-to-back four-game sweeps of the Yankees and Orioles. It is the first time they've had two straight four-game sweeps since doing so versus Oakland and Minnesota on July 1-7, 1968.

Mancini-First-Orange-Sidebar.jpgTrailing 3-0 in the last of the third, Mancini rocked a three-run homer to left-center off David Price for a 3-3 tie. He hit his second homer on a 2-2 changeup. After going without a homer in his last 18 games this year at Triple-A Norfolk, Mancini hit his second big league homer tonight in his sixth plate appearance. It scored Chris Davis and Manny Machado, who had singled off Price.

Mancini became the first Oriole to ever homer in his first two major league starts. He also became the first Oriole to homer for his first two major league hits.

But that 3-3 tie didn't hold. In the Boston fifth, Travis Shaw drew a leadoff walk off Vance Worley, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Andrew Benintendi's single. Two innings later, Hanley Ramirez hit a solo homer off Donnie Hart for a 5-3 lead. Ramirez hit No. 29 on a 2-2 pitch. The homer ended Hart's scoreless run to begin his major league career at 15 1/3 innings.

Earlier, Boston took a 3-0 lead on O's starter Chris Tillman, who lasted just 1 2/3 innings in his shortest start of the year. Tillman allowed five hits and three runs on 63 pitches. It was the seventh time this year an O's starter failed to make it through two innings - that leads the majors.

Tillman allowed a Ramirez RBI single during a 35-pitch first inning. In the second, he allowed a Jackie Bradley Jr. triple and a Sandy Leon single for a 2-0 lead. Later that inning, he walked two batters, including David Ortiz with the bases loaded to force in a third run and end his night. Tillman entered the game with a career 10-3 mark and 2.74 ERA in 19 career starts versus Boston. The Orioles are now 21-8 in his 2016 starts.

Price went seven innings, allowing six hits and three runs with two walks and five strikeouts. He is now 17-8 with an ERA of 3.91 and is 11-5 in 24 career starts against the Orioles. The Orioles have scored just 12 runs the last six games. Boston won the season series 11-8.

Now the Orioles welcome the Arizona Diamondbacks to Camden Yards tomorrow for their first visit here since June 2007. Right-hander Yovani Gallardo (5-8, 5.77 ERA) pitches against right-hander Shelby Miller (2-12, 6.90 ERA).
