Manny Machado on his big night and his 150th homer

With two home runs tonight, Orioles shortstop Manny Machado became the youngest player in Baltimore Orioles team history to hit 150 home runs. He drove in six runs in a 9-4 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

"It is a great accomplishment," Machado said. "Beyond grateful. Words can't even describe how exciting that is in reaching that milestone. Doing it with this organization and the team I've been doing it for. Couldn't be any happier that we came out with a win. At the end of the day milestones will never be forgotten and I'm glad it happened here at home."

Machado produced his fourth multi-homer game of the year and 18th of his career. The 18 multi-homer games ties him with Andruw Jones for fifth all time in multi-homer games by a right-handed batter age 25 or younger.

He hit his first grand slam of the season and No. 8 of his career. With eight slams since 2012, he is tied with teammate Chris Davis for the major league lead in that span.

"Is it eight? Yeah, that's a lot. Those situations I try to at least get one RBI in. Try to see the ball up and try to get one. Don't get greedy. Just fortunate to get good wood on it and Camden Yards is a great ballpark to hit at too," he said.

Machado has hit 12 homers for the season and five have come in the first inning. His six RBIs are a season-high and this was fourth career game of six or more RBIs. He's hitting .400 with eight home runs in 19 games at home.

A reporter mentioned that his hot hitting often still resulted in losses and now the Orioles have their first three-game win streak, since taking seven in a row late last August. His big numbers are leading to wins for the team now.

"The team is helping itself," he said. "We're getting on base and playing good D. Pitching staff is doing what they can do. We're never going to quit. We're fighting to the end and that is what this team is doing."

The Orioles got Mark Trumbo off the DL on May 1 and second baseman Jonathan Schoop on Tuesday. In four games with those two in the lineup together for the first time this year, the Orioles have scored 32 runs and hit 11 homers.

"Those guys carry this offense as well. Putting them in there is another bat threat. It won't be an easy at-bat now for pitchers, one through nine. You can see a difference with them in the lineup already," Machado said.

Winning pitcher Kevin Gausman improved 3-2 with an ERA of 3.18, allowing a career-high 11 hits but just two runs over 7 1/3. Gausman is 3-1 with a 2.14 ERA over his past six starts. He has thrown 7 1/3 or more in back-to-back starts for the first time in his career.

Gausman on allowing all those hits but just two runs: "Luckily, most of them were singles and that's a good lineup over there. They're tough. They see a lot of pitches. They definitely didn't make it easy on me. I had guys on base every inning. A lot of guys in scoring position, but Chance (Sisco) called a great game and the defense behind me, Manny made some great plays. Huge double play that they turned. Definitely good to see Manny and Schoop out there together again."

Gausman on Machado: "Really, from spring training on, he's looked locked-in from the get-go. I think that was his 150th home run. I don't know exactly how young he is, but that's got to be pretty good for however young he is. But he's impressive. Every day he does something that just kind of impresses you even more. We're definitely happy to have him on the team."

Mark Trumbo on the offense picking up on this homestand: "That was really nice. I think tonight was a great game all around. Kevin threw the ball really well. We had some clutch hits. Manny is doing a tremendous job. Great game."

Trumbo on Machado's big season: "He is destroying baseballs. He was really, really tough to pitch to already, but this year especially when they make a mistake he's all over it. Not only the offense, but tremendous defense too. That last double play was special."

Sisco on Gausman giving up a lot of hits but few runs: "Just making really good pitches in big situations. Credit goes to him on making some very important pitches with guys on base. We had a few quick innings but the big thing was pitching well with the guys on base. He is commanding his fastball very well right now and when he does that the other stuff plays off that."
