Matt Williams updates Anthony Rendon, Jayson Werth and Ryan Zimmerman

Anthony Rendon's minor league rehab assignment continued in Single-A Potomac's 7-0 win at Frederick today. Appearing as the designated hitter, Rendon went 1-for-3 with a single, two walks and a run scored. Rendon played the previous two games at third base for Potomac.

Nationals manager Matt Williams indicated he would like to see Rendon play a full nine innings in the field before activating him.

"He's scheduled to go again tomorrow," Williams said. "That's at least five (innings), depending on how he feels. So he's not that far off from playing nine."

A left quad strain landed Rendon on the 15-day disabled list on June 25.

Ryan Zimmerman (left foot plantar fasciitis) is scheduled to bat second and play first base for Double-A Harrisburg tonight. Zimmerman went 1-for-2 with a single in Harrisburg's loss to Bowie on Sunday.

Jayson Werth (fractured left wrist) is batting third and playing left field for Triple-A Syracuse tonight. It will be Werth's second game with the Chiefs after playing three with Potomac. He is 3-for-10 with a walk and two RBIs combined in the four games.

Werth fractured his left wrist when he was struck by a fastball in San Diego on May 15. It's his second time on the DL this year after missing the first week of the season while recovering from offseason AC joint surgery on his right shoulder.

In an interview with Chiefs play-by-play broadcaster Kevin Brown earlier today, Werth said his wrist is good.

"I'm really pleased with how it's come along," Werth told Brown. "I've come a long way in a short period of time. I'm a little surprised with how good it has responded. It gets stronger and stronger every day. I feel good. I'm in good shape. I've been able to train and do a lot of things I wasn't able to do this winter with my shoulder. I feel like I'm close. I just need some at-bats and some games played to get my legs in playing shape and hopefully get out of here."

Werth missed all of spring training and never got his timing right when he returned to the Nationals in April. In 27 games, Werth batted just .208 with two homers and 12 RBIs.

Williams didn't put a number on the at-bats Werth needs during his rehab stint to feel completely comfortable at the plate.

"50 at-bats would be ideal, but I don't think he'll be able to get 50 at-bats," Williams said. "It just takes too long. Can't afford to have him out that long when he's healthy. Our concern is that when he comes back, there is no issue with the shoulder, first and foremost. The wrist is fine, he's building strength in that. The legs are good. Last thing you want is for the wrist to be OK and he's not fully in shape and something happens and he pulls a muscle and then goes down again. You would love a bunch of at-bats, unfortunately during the course of a season, you don't get as many."

Williams declined to name a timetable for when any of his three stars will find their way back into the Nationals lineup.

"Too early to say," Williams said. "We're going to wait and make sure that they feel good about where they're at and that there are no limitations physically before they come back. They are on the right track. They are getting at-bats. They are getting in games. They are coming out of those games well. That's all we care about."
