Maya clears waivers, assigned to Triple-A (Gonzalez done)

After a very brief stint with the Nationals and a couple of days on the waiver wire, Yunesky Maya will be heading back to Triple-A Syracuse. The Nationals have announced that Maya has cleared waivers and will be assigned to Triple-A. The 31-year-old right-hander will slot back into Syracuse's rotation. The Nats called Maya up May 21, and he allowed a two-run walk-off homer to the Giants' Pablo Sandoval that night. That was the only game Maya appeared in for the Nats before they designated him for assignment May 25. In 16 career big league appearances with the Nats, Maya is 1-6 with a 5.80 ERA. Because he was designated for assignment, Maya is no longer on the Nats' 40-man roster. Meanwhile, Gio Gonzalez is getting smacked around here at Nats Park today, having allowed 11 baserunners through five innings. And that doesn't bode well for tomorrow, when the Nats will need all the bullpen help they can get with a replacement starter taking the mound in place of Ross Detwiler. Gonzalez and the Nats trail the Orioles 4-1 as we head to the sixth. The O's put up a four-spot on Gonzalez in the fourth inning, capitalizing on Gonzalez's third walk of the day. He issued a free pass to Chris Davis leading off the inning, and Matt Wieters, Yamaico Navarro, Nick Markakis and Manny Machado all tacked on hits in the frame to push four runs across. A Matt Wieters sac fly in the fifth has given the O's a three-run edge. Gonzalez is at 93 pitches through five. He'll take the mound to start the sixth, but likely doesn't have much left in the tank. Craig Stammen is warming in the Nats bullpen, meaning he won't be an option to start tomorrow and likely wouldn't be able to piggyback whoever does end up getting the start. Tyler Moore has the Nats' lone RBI, coming on a double down the left field line in the second inning. The double scored Adam LaRoche, who notched his second stolen base of the season. Ryan Zimmerman committed his ninth error of the season in the third, sending a throw to second base wide of the mark. Update: Gonzalez didn't make it through the sixth, getting pulled after 5 2/3 innings of work. This marks his shortest outing since April 30 at the Braves. The left-hander allowed four runs on eight hits and four walks. He struck out three and threw 109 pitches, 67 strikes. Not Gonzalez's best work by any stretch. He had allowed just three earned runs over his last three outings, spanning 21 innings, but lacked his good stuff today. He struggled to find the zone, and when he did, the Orioles hit the ball hard. It's still a 4-1 game as we go to the bottom of the sixth.
