Mike Wright finally gets a second chance

The Orioles should be able to play tonight's game without any delays, without the sky opening and the tarp unrolling.

The forecast calls for temperatures in the upper 70s during the day and dipping to 47 in the evening. No chance of precipitation. Rain doesn't return until Friday when the Orioles are in Kansas City.

The Blue Jays arrive at Camden Yards with a 7-7 record that puts them 2 1/2 games behind the Orioles in the American League East. They're 3-3 at home and 4-4 on the road.

The Orioles were 8-11 against Toronto last season, snapping a streak of three consecutive years winning the series. They split 10 games in Baltimore.

A 12-5 loss on April 10 marked the third time that the Orioles surrendered 10 or more runs in their home opener and the first since April 4, 1988.

Mike Wright has one start this year and three reasons why he's been pushed back: rain on opening day causing Chris Tillman to return on short rest, a postponement in Baltimore due to frigid temperatures and a wintry mix, and a postponement Sunday in Arlington due to the threat of storms that vacated around the scheduled first pitch and didn't return until late at night.

Though he's made only 10 major league starts, two have come against the Blue Jays. He's also faced them once in relief and has compiled a 9.45 ERA in 6 2/3 innings, with 12 hits, seven walks and two hit batters.

The current Blue Jays are 10-for-26 against Wright. Jose Bautista is 2-for-3 with a double, home run and two walks, Ryan Goins and Kevin Pillar are 2-for-3 and Justin Smoak is 2-for-4 with two doubles.

Lots of small sample sizes that still resemble land mines.

Marcus Stroman is making his fourth start this season. He's allowed 10 runs and 15 hits in 21 1/3 innings for a 4.22 ERA.

Stroman has worked eight innings twice in three starts. Ubaldo Jimenez is the only Orioles starter to record an out in the seventh.

In three career appearances against the Orioles, Stroman has allowed six runs and 15 hits and struck out 15 batters in 18 innings. He's 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA in two starts at Camden Yards covering 14 innings.

The current Orioles are 4-for-28 against Stroman. Adam Jones is 2-for-3, Jonathan Schoop is 1-for-4 with a double and Caleb Joseph is 1-for-7 with a home run.

Brian Matusz is scheduled to go multiple innings again tonight at Single-A Frederick. The Orioles could attempt to stretch him out to four innings after he worked three Friday night.

Matusz's rehab assignment runs through Wednesday. He could be activated over the weekend.

Manager Buck Showalter wanted to wait until Kevin Gausman's scheduled bullpen session on Sunday before revealing whether the right-hander would make another start in the minors or come off the disabled list.

Note: MLB Network's Jon Heyman reported that the Orioles made an offer to 37-year-old pitcher Kyle Lohse, who's represented by Scott Boras.

Lohse was 5-13 with a 5.85 ERA and 1.464 WHIP last year in 37 games (22 starts) with the Brewers that spanned 152 1/3 innings.

The Orioles want to improve their pitching depth and Lohse is searching for a good fit. He hasn't jumped at the club's offer and obviously is holding out for something better.

Triple-A Norfolk's rotation includes Odrisamer Despaigne, Nick Additon, Terry Doyle and Ariel Miranda. The Orioles released Todd Redmond after two starts.
