BRADENTON, Fla. - Orioles pitcher Wade Miley had an ice pack on his left forearm, where a line drive grazed him this afternoon, and another one around his left rib cage area, but he insisted that he was fine and would have continued to pitch in the regular season.

Miley, standing outside the visiting clubhouse at LECOM Park, said no tests were scheduled after he was banged up by Elias Díaz's comebacker in the second inning.

Wade-Miley-throwing-orange-sidebar.jpg"A little pinball action," he said. "Just kind of bounced around a little bit, upper arm, rib cage, but it's good. Just kind of burned a little bit. We're good. More precautionary to take me out. I could have stayed out there, but just to be safe."

Miley said he wasn't worried after being struck and walking off the field with head athletic trainer Richie Bancells.

"Not too much," he said. "I felt it was nothing serious. It's fine.

"The big blow was probably up in here (side), but it's fine. I didn't see it at all. He hit it pretty hard."

Miley said he would have "fought to stay in the game" if it wasn't an exhibition. Manager Buck Showalter left him no choice.

"I guess do the right thing after a bunch of pitches in that first inning," he said.

The Pirates worked him for 31 pitches while taking a 3-0 lead. He left in the second with his count at 37.

"I was making some pretty good pitches," he said. "Kind of some bad luck. (Starling) Marté, I had him kind of where I wanted him and left a ball out over and he pushed it into right. Then the swinging bunt and things kind of escalated. I thought I made some pretty good pitches, felt pretty good about it. Just one of those days.

"Just kind of put it behind you. The first inning's tough. One ball hit hard. Probably the best pitch I threw, the changeup down, and that's the one that was hit the hardest. And obviously the last ball. But just move on."

The Pirates scored a run in the second inning after David Hess replaced Miley - it's charged to the veteran left-hander - and lead 4-0 in the bottom of the third. Chris Lee is pitching.

Update: Rule 5 pick Aneury Tavárez lined an RBI single into left field with two outs in the fourth inning to reduce the Pirates' lead to 4-1. Trey Mancini led off with a single and Johnny Giavotella walked.

Tavárez wasn't in the original lineup, but he replaced Rule 5 pick Anthony Santander.

Update II: The Pirates scored a run off Lee in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead. Manny Machado made a diving stop and throw, but the ball skipped past Mancini and Marté raced home.

Trey Mancini had an RBI double in the top of the sixth to reduce the lead to 5-2. Mancini is 2-for-3.
