Wrapping up a 5-2 loss and updating injuries

BRADENTON, Fla. - Chris Tillman's half mound session this morning was so encouraging, he's now scheduled to throw off a regular mound on Sunday. Manager Buck Showalter indicated this morning that the club might wait until Monday.

Showalter said he expects left-hander Wade Miley to make his next scheduled start after he consulted with head athletic trainer Richie Bancells.

Miley was hit on the left forearm and ribcage area by Elias Díaz's line drive and came out of the game one batter into the second inning.

"He should be OK," Showalter said after a 5-2 loss to the Pirates. "I think the deflection bothered him more than the forearm. Scared him more than anything. Richie thinks he'll be all right."

Miley was scheduled to go three innings or around 45 pitches. He was done after one-plus and 37 pitches.

"Next guy in line," Showalter said. "You always realize that you're one thing like that from happening. That's why you've always got to attack the what-ifs. But I think Wade should be all right.

"I don't live in that 'Woe is me,' you walk out there and, 'Oh, my gosh, the sky is falling.' You might find something around the corner. But Richie thought he'd make his next start, but we'll have a better feel for it tomorrow."

No tests are planned for Miley at this time.

Second baseman Johnny Giavotella is a bigger concern. He was hit on the inner portion of his left wrist while diving for a line drive early in the game. He had a double and walk before coming out after five innings during a series of substitutions.

"We'll probably take a day or so on him," Showalter said. "That ball smoked him, but he's not going to say anything. It's pretty sore."

Rule 5 pick Anthony Santander was scratched from the lineup after waking up with a stiff neck. Another player who slept wrong.

Santander may not play again until Sunday against the Phillies in Sarasota.

Chris Lee was scheduled to go three innings and made it, retiring nine of 11 batters.

Mychal Givens will pitch again on Monday before leaving for the World Baseball Classic.

The wind robbed the Orioles of four or five home runs today, including Chance Sisco's drive to left field in the ninth. Manny Machado crushed a ball to center field in the fifth that almost fell in front of Starling Marté. Welington Castillo also deserved a better fate, and Ryan Flaherty had a ball die on the left field track.
