More on roster moves (updated)

I wanted to chime in again on today's roster moves, since I'm home and not pulling off the road to tweet and dictate blog updates. The Orioles optioned Mitch Atkins to Triple-A Norfolk after today's game, and the move can't come as much of a surprise. Manager Buck Showalter noted how Atkins again displayed poor fastball command, and the right-hander has allowed nine runs and 13 hits, with three walks and five home runs, in his last two starts spanning only 4 2/3 innings. Atkins held the Rangers to one run over six innings in his Orioles debut, but it went downhill quickly. Third baseman Josh Bell and reliever Mark Worrell will join the Orioles tomorrow at Camden Yards. Bell will be recalled. Worrell will have his contract purchased, since he's not on the 40-man roster. Worrell could be here one day as Alfredo Simon's replacement. Simon will go on the restricted list tomorrow while he attends a hearing in the Dominican Republic. He has a flight back to Baltimore tomorrow night. Team officials hope he's on it. Worrell is 0-4 with a 2.95 ERA and 12 saves in 36 innings with the Tides. He was chosen to the International League All-Star team. Bell is hitting .257 with 11 doubles, two triples, 16 home runs and 47 RBIs for the Tides. He's struck out 97 times in 338 at-bats. The switch-hitting Bell is batting .272 against right-handers and .222 vs. left-handers. He has three homers and nine RBIs in 10 games this month. Update: Bell went 0-for-5 with three strikeouts today. Bell or Matt Angle could be optioned if Luke Scott is ready to come off the disabled list on Tuesday. Also, relievers Kevin Gregg and Michael Gonzalez have suspensions pending. And infielder Cesar Izturis could be activated on July 23. We still have plenty of roster moves coming in the near future. Did anyone predict that the Orioles' roster this season would include Atkins, Worrell, Angle, Ryan Adams, Chris Jakubauskas, Pedro Viola and Blake Davis? Did you think Mark Hendrickson would return? At least you know what tomorrow brings. Speaking of tomorrow, the Orioles are expected to officially announce J.J. Hardy's contract extension.
