He wants to play again this year, but O's center fielder Adam Jones is trying to come to grips with the concept that he may not.
Jones suffered a badly sprained left ankle last night vs. the Yankees. It will keep him out at least two to three weeks and his season may well be over with so little time left.
"It's a tough injury, but I see myself playing again, it's just a matter of when. But this sucks, it just sucks. It's something you can't control.
"It's frustrating, I haven't been swinging the bat as well as early in the year. I wanted to have a strong finish, I won't say this eliminates that, but it hurts the chances of me coming back for the rest of the year.
"I just hit the edge of the bag with my front cleat and my foot just rolled. It just turned out to be freakish play."
Jones, who made his first All-Star team this year, is batting .277-19-70 in 119 games. He'd like to get back on the field, but realizes he shouldn't rush back if he's not completely ready.
"It wouldn't be smart, we have five weeks left. I want to be on the field with my teammates, but at the same time, you've got to be smart. Should I come back for the last week or couple weeks or just let it heal.
"My goals coming into this year included to have a better year than I did last year. I think the first half indicates I did that, the second half not as much. But overall, I've grown as a player. There's more I need to learn but this season is a success.
"If I could play through this I would, but right now I can't even stand on it."
Jones said all the losing this year has not taken a toll on him. He understands what the organization is going through right now.
"We're trying to implement a youth movement around here. You take it with a grain of salt. Hopefully one day we'll be a contender in this division."
More numbers on Jones:
First-half: .303-12-47 in 80 games
Second-half: .222-7-23 in 39 games
He is batting just .133 over his last 17 games and has not homered over his last 20 games.
