Lefty Nate Moreau pitched a no-hitter tonight in his first start as a Frederick Key. He got the last out on a strikeout on a 2-2 pitch, as the Keys won 7-0 at Salem.
It's the 6th no-hitter in Keys history, but first complete-game, nine-inning no-hitter since John Maine vs. Winston-Salem on July 3, 2003.
The 23-year-old Moreau fanned six without a walk in his first Carolina League start. In the ninth, he got a strikeout for out number one, then a fly out and then a strike out to end the no-hitter. Moreau, who began the year in the Delmarva Shorebirds bullpen, was hitting 91 and 92 with his fastball.
In the eighth inning, center fielder Xavier Avery made two nice running catches to preserve the no-hitter. Right fielder Ronnie Welty made ten put outs and left fielder Kyle Hudson made two catches at the wall.
An 11th-round draft pick out of the University of Georgia in 2008, Moreau went 2-3, 2.98 with Delmarva until getting the call to join Frederick. Over his last 11 games with Delmarva, seven as a starter he pitched to an ERA of 1.49.
Moreau took a perfect game into the 6th, but with one out, he made a two-base throwing error. An error on third baseman Buck Britton in the 8th gave Salem its second and last baserunner of the night.
Here are some running notes from the later innings of the game that were posted tonight:
The first start of Nate Moreau's Carolina League time with the Frederick Keys is progressing nicely tonight at Salem.
Moreau retired the first 16 batters he faced in the game before Ryan Dent reached second base on his throwing error. Moreau, who went 2-3, 2.98 in 16 games, seven starts for Delmarva, has not allowed a hit in this game through six innings.
The Keys lead 1-0 in the seventh of that game.
Update: Moreau has just pitched through the seventh at Salem without allowing a hit.
Update 2: The Keys scored twice in the 7th and have added four in the top of the 8th for a 7-0 lead. Keys broadcaster Adam Pohl just said on the broadcast that he cannot see the Keys bullpen from where he is working to know if Moreau will come out to pitch in the last of eighth.
Update 3: Moreau is pitching in the last of the 8th. He got a ground out for the first out in the 8th. Center fielder Xavier Avery just made a running, lunging catch of a drive to center for the second out of the inning on a stellar defensive play. With two outs, third baseman Buck Britton made an error as Salem has its second runner of the night on base. Avery just made a running catch of a line drive in the gap for the third out. Salem is hitless through eight vs. Moreau.
Update 4: Moreau has taken the mound for the last of the ninth. He just got a swinging strike out for the first out in the ninth. Moreau gets a fly out for the second out and needs one more out.
