More on the latest roster maneuvering and today's game

Now that Ryan Flaherty has been optioned to Triple-A Norfolk, the Orioles will make the other half of the roster move official this morning and activate second baseman Jonathan Schoop from the disabled list.

Schoop finally will be reunited with double play partner J.J. Hardy. It remains to be seen how much of an immediate impact he's going to have on an offense that's again scuffling to score runs. He's back in the big leagues now, not raking against Eastern League and Carolina League pitching.

Nolan_Reimold-sidebar_annoyed.jpgCredit the Orioles again for figuring out how to manipulate their roster. They want Schoop in the lineup today against White Sox left-hander Carlos Rodon. Flaherty is allowed to replace Nolan Reimold after the outfielder goes on paternity leave, giving them a utility infielder to back up at every position.

Flaherty won't be glued to the bench. Schoop may not play every day as he's eased back into action. It could be a similar arrangement initially to the one we're seeing behind the plate with Matt Wieters and Caleb Joseph.

The Orioles will need to make another roster move when Reimold returns during Thursday's off day. With the All-Star break approaching, they could send down a starting pitcher and bring him back once play resumes.

We've seen that one more than "The Shawshank Redemption."

With Bud Norris out of the rotation, the Orioles will start Wei-Yin Chen, Kevin Gausman and Ubaldo Jimenez in Minnesota.

Miguel Gonzalez is due for a good start. He hasn't gone more than five innings in his last three outings, and most recently allowed six runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings against the Rangers.

Gonzalez has made two starts against the White Sox, both at Camden Yards, and allowed four runs and 13 hits in 12 innings. Melky Cabrera is 1-for-10. Conor Gillaspie is 3-for-6 with a double.

The Orioles were supposed to face Chris Sale, named the American League's Pitcher of the Month for June, but he's pushed back to Monday. They get Rodon, the third-overall pick in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of North Carolina State.

Rodon worked a scoreless eighth inning in the April 29 no-fan game at Camden Yards. He struck out Joseph, the only current Oriole who's faced him.

Rodon is 3-1 with a 4.07 ERA in 12 games, including nine starts. Control has been an issue, with 31 walks over 55 1/3 innings. That's 5.0 walks per nine innings.

Right-handers are batting .313 against Rodon, while left-handers are hitting .215.

Rodon is 3-0 with a 2.39 ERA in five home games and 0-1 with a 5.59 ERA in seven road games. Opponents are batting .216 against him at U.S. Cellular Field and .331 on the road.
