Nationals announce full, 63-man spring training roster

Erick Fedde, Andrew Stevenson and Drew Ward are among the 24 non-roster invitees to Nationals spring training, the first opportunity for all three prospects to play in big league camp.

The club announced all of its non-roster invitees this afternoon, three days before pitchers and catchers are due to report to the brand-new complex in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Several previously announced veterans who signed minor-league contracts - pitchers Matt Albers, Jeremy Guthrie, Joe Nathan, Vance Worley, Tim Collins and Neal Cotts, infielder Emmanuel Burriss and outfielder Brandon Snyder - are included on the list of invitees.

Eight players in the Nationals farm system who are not yet on the organization's 40-man roster were given invitations to big-league camp: Fedde, Stevenson, Drew, Taylor Hill, Kyle McGowin, Wander Suero, Nick Lee and Neftali Soto.

Fedde is perhaps the biggest name from that group. The Nationals' 2014 first-round draft pick was named the organization's No. 2 prospect (behind outfielder Victor Robles) by Baseball America this winter and could have an outside shot at making his major-league debut sometime in 2017.

Fedde, who turns 24 later this month, went 8-5 with a 3.12 ERA in 23 games (22 starts) between Single-A Potomac and Double-A Harrisburg last season. The right-hander struck out 123 batters while walking only 29 in 121 innings.

Stevenson, a second-round pick in 2015, hit .276 with a .332 on-base percentage, 36 extra-base hits and 39 stolen bases last season with Potomac and Harrisburg. The 22-year-old outfielder has only 188 games of professional experience, but the Nats haven't been afraid to promote him up their organizational ladder in his two seasons with them.

Ward, a third-round pick in 2013, hit .252 with a .348 on-base percentage, 14 homers and 56 RBIs in 117 games with Potomac and Harrisburg last season. The 22-year-old third baseman further made a name for himself in the Arizona Fall League, where he hit .353 with eight homers and nine stolen bases in 21 games.

These 24 non-roster invitees, along with the 39 players currently on the 40-man roster, give the Nationals 63 players in major league camp to open the spring.
