Nationals Recall RHP Jordan Zimmermann from Syracuse

The Washington Nationals today recalled right-handed pitcher Jordan Zimmermann from Syracuse of the Triple-A International League. Nationals Senior Vice President and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement. Zimmermann will make his 2010 debut in tonight's series opener against the St. Louis Cardinals at Nationals Park. The 24-year-old has not pitched in the big leagues since July 18, 2009, prior to having season-ending "Tommy John" ligament-replacement surgery on August 19, 2009. As a true rookie last season, Zimmermann went 3-5 with a 4.63 ERA and 92 strikeouts in 16 starts (91.1 IP). At the time of his injury, he led all big league rookies in strikeouts. Zimmermann went 1-0 with a 0.53 ERA in four starts with Syracuse in 2010. He posted a .140 batting average against with 12 strikeouts in 17.0 innings pitched. In 10 minor league games this season, including five rehab starts, Zimmermann finished 1-2 with a 1.59 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 39.2 innings pitched. Selected by the Nationals with the 67th-overall pick in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, Zimmermann is 16-7 with one save and a 2.60 ERA in 50 games/47 starts over parts of four seasons in the minors.
