The Washington Nationals selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Carlos Torres and designated right-handed pitcher A.J. Cole for assignment on Friday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.
Torres, 35, joins the Nationals after making four scoreless appearances for Triple-A Syracuse. He did not allow a hit, walked one and struck out three batters along the way.
A veteran of eight Major League seasons, Torres spent the previous two seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers, going 7-7 with 33 holds, three saves and a 3.43 ERA in 139 games. During that timespan, Torres tossed more than one inning of relief 35 times, posting a 1.99 ERA (14 ER/63.1 IP) and a .167/.256/.279 opp. slash line in those appearances.
Torres has appeared in 348 Major League games (16 starts) since his debut in 2009. He is 30-31 with 60 holds, five saves and a 4.00 ERA during stints with Chicago-AL (2009-10), Colorado (2012), New York-NL (2013-15) and Milwaukee (2016-17). He signed with Washington as a Minor League free agent on March 30, 2018.
Cole, 26, went 5-8 with a 5.32 ERA in 26 games (19 starts) for the Nationals.
