No one is elected into Hall of Fame this year

The Hall of Fame pitched a shutout this year. For only the eighth time since voting began in 1936, a winning candidate did not emerge from the balloting conducted by members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America. There were 569 ballots cast, the third-highest total in the history of the voting, but none of the 37 candidates received the necessary 75 percent for election. Former Houston Astros second baseman Craig Biggio led the way with 68.2 percent of the votes, followed by Jack Morris (67.7), Jeff Bagwell (59.6), Mike Piazza (57.8) and Tim Raines (52.2). Former Orioles closer Lee Smith received 47.8 percent of the votes. Former Orioles first baseman Rafael Palmeiro, in his third year on the ballot, received 8.8 percent - a drop from 12.6 percent last year. The Hall doors remain closed to the fourth member of the 3,000 hit/500 home run club. The same goes for Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa - all first-timers on the ballot, all under heavy suspicion of steroid use. Clemens received 37.6 percent of the votes, Bonds 36.2 and Sosa 12.5. Dale Murphy, the two-time National League MVP in his final year on the ballot, received only 18.6 percent. His only chance for induction now is if he's voted in by the veterans committee. A player must receive at least 5 percent to remain on the ballot next year.
