Outfielder Hyun Soo Kim has one more rehab game at Double-A Bowie before rejoining the Orioles on Tuesday. He needs a more level playing field.
Kim led off yesterday and served as the designated hitter against Erie's Josh Turley, a left-handed knuckleballer. He went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts.
A right-hander with the standard repertoire would be more desirable for Kim tonight as he preps for his return to the majors.
Ubaldo Jimenez could come off the paternity list before tonight's game at Camden Yards. If he does, the Orioles will need to make room for him in the bullpen if they haven't traded him.
Tyler Wilson could be optioned or the Orioles could send down Odrisamer Despaigne, who worked 3 2/3 innings Friday night after relieving Dylan Bundy.
Wilson was told Saturday afternoon, shortly after 3 p.m., to drive from Norfolk to Baltimore. He didn't know whether he'd be recalled because the Orioles were unsure of Jimenez's status. They just needed him here.
"They said somebody will reach out to you to confirm one way or the other," Wilson said. "They could reach out and tell you to turn around and come back or they could confirm it."
Wilson's two starts with Norfolk since being optioned before the break were shortened to ease him back into competition and also make him available to the Orioles.
"I knew going into the starts that I was going to be on a shorter pitch count just because taking a week to 10 days off from throwing like I had, it's kind of like pushing reset a little bit," he said. "Kind of throwing some shorter outings to find my bearings a little bit, and I felt great my last two outings.
"It's trying to find my tempo again, my timing and everything, because when you take 10 days off it takes a little while to get back into it. But the latter half of my second outing I started feeling really good."
The Orioles wanted to freshen up Wilson, who allowed 13 runs and 19 hits in eight innings in his last two starts.
"I think that was the intent behind it and I definitely feel better having taken some time off," he said. "I definitely benefited from taking that All-Star break and a couple more days after that of just not throwing. I felt really good for my arm and body. I definitely feel a little fresher.
"Now, just like always, take it when they give it to me and be ready to go every day."
The Rockies are making their first visit to Camden Yards since 2013, when the Orioles won two of three games. They also played in Baltimore during the 2005 and 2007 seasons.
Adam Jones went 7-for-14 with a double, home run, four RBIs and three runs scored in the 2013 series.
Yovani Gallardo completed seven innings in his last start in New York, territory he hadn't stepped foot in since June 27, 2015. But he allowed four runs in the loss and also issued four walks, raising his total to 15 in 21 innings this month.
Gallardo is 0-5 with a 6.08 ERA in 10 career games (nine starts) versus the Rockies, with 36 earned runs (40 total) and 71 hits allowed in 53 1/3 innings. In his most recent appearance against them, he surrendered five earned runs (eight total) and 10 hits over five innings in a 10-4 loss on June 29, 2014.
Carlos Gonzalez is 7-for-17 with two doubles and a home run against Gallardo. Former Orioles catcher Nick Hundley is 3-for-8 with two doubles.
The rotation bar suddenly has been raised. Orioles starters have gone seven innings in four of the last five games. The group has produced a 1.04 ERA in the last four games and a 2.90 ERA in the last 12.
The Orioles are facing left-hander Jorge De La Rosa, who's 6-7 with a 6.07 ERA in 16 games (13 starts). He also has a 1.665 WHIP over 72 2/3 innings and is averaging 4.2 walks per nine innings.
Find a comfortable seat and unwrap a Snickers.
De La Rosa allowed three earned runs or fewer in three consecutive starts until his last outing against the Rays, who roughed him up for seven earned runs (nine total) and 11 hits in four innings.
Left-handers are hitting .306 against De La Rosa this season and right-handers are hitting .293.
De La Rosa made one career start against the Orioles in May 2007 with the Royals and allowed five runs and eight hits in five innings. Mark Trumbo is 3-for-6 with two home runs against him. Nolan Reimold homered in his only at-bat.
Gallardo is 2-for-4 with a double, but I'm pretty sure the Orioles will use a designated hitter tonight.
