O's 2009 top draft pick Matt Hobgood to have season-ending shoulder surgery

Right-hander Matt Hobgood, the Orioles' 2009 first-round draft pick, will have arthroscopic right shoulder surgery July 6 to remove a bone spur. The procedure will end his 2015 season.

Hobgood is 1-1 with an ERA of 6.52 in six games this year at Double-A Bowie. He got off to a good start for the Baysox, throwing 5 1/3 scoreless innings in his first two games, but a DL stint soon followed, and on June 19 he went back on the disabled list for the second time. The recovery time for this surgery is unclear right now and the Orioles will know more after the procedure.

Hobgood gave up two runs in an inning on June 17 in his last outing and his velocity was well down in recent outings, into the low to mid-80s.

He had shoulder surgery in April 2012, missed all of that season and returned in 2013 as a relief pitcher. He had a solid spring training in Florida in March and broke camp at the Double-A level for the first time.

But once again, an injury issue soon followed and he is back on the injured list. This time, it's possible his Orioles career could be over. He is a minor league free agent at the end of this year.

The Orioles selected him with the fifth overall pick in 2009 out of Norco (Calif.) High School after he was named the Gatorade National Player of the Year for 2008-09.

In 110 career games in the O's minors, Hobgood is 17-24 with an ERA of 4.98.

Meanwhile, Bowie outfielder Glynn Davis is day-to-day with a strained knee and back. He has not played since Thursday after falling running to first base while lunging for the bag. In 68 Baysox games, he is batting .272 with two homers and 24 RBIs.

Meanwhile, Bowie right-hander Elih Villanueva has been named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending Sunday. He is the second Baysox pitcher to win the award this season (Terry Doyle, June 8) and the third Baysox player to win an Eastern League weekly award during the month of June.

Last Monday Villanueva threw a complete-game shutout in a 6-0 win. In 10 starts for the Baysox this season, Villanueva is 5-5 with a 2.54 ERA, 42 strikeouts and 11 walks in 63 2/3 innings. He has the second-best ERA among starters on the team and the sixth-lowest in the Eastern League to go along with the third-best WHIP (0.93). Villanueva has also made four starts with Triple-A Norfolk, going 1-1 with a 6.53 ERA.
