LOS ANGELES – Orioles infielder Jorge Mateo, on the injured list since July 25 with a left elbow subluxation, had surgery today and will miss the rest of the 2024 season.
The O's, until this news, held out longshot hope he might return late this year and possibly for the postseason.
But today he had successful left elbow ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction with internal brace and flexor repair.
The surgery was performed by Dr. Keith Meister at Trinity Park Surgery Center in Arlington, Texas.
Mateo has one more year of arbitration eligibility coming this winter and could be a free agent at the end of the 2025 season.
Over 68 games this season, he hit .229/.267/.401/.668 with five homers, 18 RBIs and a 91 OPS+.
After their 3-2 win over the Dodgers in front of 52,382 last night, the Orioles look for two in a row tonight. It would give them a series win and end the Dodgers' run going 4-0-1 their previous five series.
The Orioles (77-56) begin play today one game behind the Yankees (78-55) for the American League East lead.
Right-hander Corbin Burnes (12-6, 3.28 ERA) will look to pitch the Orioles to another win. He is 1-2 with an ERA of 8.71 in his last four starts. In seven career games versus the Dodgers, he is 2-2 with a 6.12 ERA.
Righty Walker Buehler (1-4, 6.09 ERA) goes for the Dodgers. The team is 5-5 in his outings this year. He has pitched twice since coming off the injured list with a hip issue and allowed seven runs over 7 1/3 innings.
