In the second game of the Orioles-A's series tonight here at Camden Yards, Kevin Gausman (0-1, 11.25 ERA) pitches against right-hander Sonny Gray (6-1, 2.45 ERA).
Gausman was 1-3 with a 2.98 ERA in 10 starts at Triple-A Norfolk. Gausman will be making his second major league start of this season, the seventh of his career and his 22nd career big league appearance.
Gray has given up seven runs in 12 2/3 innings over his last two starts. But on the road this season, he is 3-0 with a 1.25 ERA.
Meanwhile, the third day of the baseball draft is nearing completion. The Orioles continue to draft a lot of pitchers. Of their first 34 picks this year over 36 rounds, 24 were pitchers.
They began today by taking three pitchers. In round 11, the O's drafted West Virginia University junior lefty John Means. He was ranked No. 292 on Baseball America's top 500.
This season, he went 6-2 with a 3.13 ERA in 12 starts. In 69 innings, he walked 18 and fanned 46. The BA scouting report said his fastball works at 88-91 mph, touching 93 and his changeup is his top secondary pitch.
In round 12, the O's drafted USC right-hander Nigel Nootbaar. Baseball America described him as having arm strength, but major control issues, and said his delivery is a mess. But his fastball ranges from 91-94 mph and he has a power curve. Sounds like the O's think they have something to work with here even though he pitched just 16 innings in college this season and walked 18. Nootbaar was ranked No. 374 by BA.
In round 13, the O's selected Central Michigan University lefty Matt Trowbridge, who this season went 2-2 with a 2.59 ERA in 16 games, two as a starter.
In round 25, the Orioles drafted Bobby Bonilla's son, Brandon, a left-hander from Grand Canyon University in Arizona. The godson of Barry Bonds, the younger Bonilla has touched 97 mph with his fastball.
In round 29, the O's selected a local Baltimore-area product, drafting right-handed pitcher Patrick Baker from Anne Arundel Community College in Maryland. This season, he went 3-1 with an ERA of 0.50 and 31 strikeouts in 18 innings.
Also today, the Nationals drafted first baseman Ryan Ripken, son of Cal Ripken Jr., in the 15th round out of Indian River State College in Florida. The Orioles originally drafted him in round 20 in 2012, but he didn't sign and went to the University of South Carolina.
This blog will be the one for in-game comments tonight. Don't get fooled by the draft info appearing here, it was just an update on today's draft.
Update, final draft tally: The Orioles made Winthrop outfielder T.J. Olesczuk their 40th-round and last pick in this draft. By my count, they selected 38 players and 27 were pitchers.
