Acquired via trade from the Seattle Mariners on Sunday, left-hander Wade Miley (7-8, 4.98 ERA) makes his Orioles debut tonight against the Texas Rangers. Miley made 19 starts for the Mariners before the deal.
Over his last three starts, he has pitched to an ERA of 2.79 with six walks to 17 strikeouts over 19 1/3 innings. Miley went 1-4 with an ERA of 3.45 in five July starts with a .248 batting average against. This followed a June where he went 1-2 with a 7.40 ERA in four starts with a .314 average against.
Miley averaged 198 innings per season from 2012-2015 and ranks 16th in the majors in innings pitched in that span. The Orioles are his fourth team since 2014; he's also played for Arizona, Boston and the Mariners.
Miley has pitched against Texas three times in 2016, going 0-2 with a 7.41 ERA and allowing 14 earned runs over 17 innings. In six career starts, he is 1-5 with a 5.55 ERA and 1.318 WHIP versus Texas.
His mound opponent is 28-year-old right-hander A.J. Griffin (4-1, 3.99 ERA). Griffin went 1-1 with a 5.84 ERA in five starts in July. He was on the disabled list from May 8-June 24 with right shoulder stiffness.
In eight road starts, he is 1-0 with a 3.96 ERA, and the Rangers are 9-4 in his 13 starts. His only career start against the Orioles came on April 27, 2013 when he was with Oakland. Over seven innings, he gave up five hits and four runs.
The Orioles look for a three-game sweep tonight after posting wins by 5-1 and 3-2 scores. Orioles pitchers have held the Rangers to three runs and 10 hits in this series. The Orioles have allowed just five runs in a three-game win streak that followed five straight losses where they allowed 30 runs.
The Orioles begin the night at 61-45 and leading the American League East by one game over Toronto and by three games over Boston. Texas is 62-46 and leading in the AL West by 5 1/2 games over Houston.
Minor league award winners: The Orioles player development department has named Single-A Delmarva right-hander Ofelky Peralta as the organization's Pitcher of the Month for July and Single-A Frederick infielder Aderlin Rodriguez as the Player of the Month for July.
A 19-year-old from the Dominican Republic, Peralta went 3-0 with a 2.57 ERA over four starts. In 21 innings, he allowed just eight hits and six runs with nine walks, 21 strikeouts and a .116 batting average against. On July 8, he pitched a rain-shortened five-inning no-hitter with eight strikeouts against Hagerstown. It was the third no-hitter in team history. In 19 starts for the season for Delmarva, Peralta is 6-5 with a 4.21 ERA.
The 24-year-old Rodriguez batted .375/.423/.688 with seven doubles, two triples, eight homers, 29 RBIs and an OPS of 1.110 in 28 games in July. He has played mostly first base for the Keys. On the year, he is batting .309 with 19 homers and 73 RBIs with a .902 OPS. He leads all O's minor leaguers in homers and RBIs, and ranks third in batting average.
