O's pitchers roughed up again as San Diego sweeps

Another game and another day when Orioles pitchers got roughed up. They allowed five more homers on this warm afternoon at Camden Yards as the Padres beat the O's 10-5 to complete a two-game sweep.

The Orioles fall to 22-58 at the 80-game mark. They have lost 13 of 14, 17 of 20 and 21 of their last 26 games. They fall to 9-30 at home and to 0-17-1 in their past 18 series.

Right-hander Dylan Bundy pitched out of a first-and-third, no-outs jam in the first. But he allowed two homers over the next two innings as San Diego opened an early 4-1 lead. Bundy allowed six hits and five runs over four-plus innings to fall to 3-10 with a 4.80 ERA.

From May 4-June 15, Bundy made eight straight starts in which he allowed three earned runs or fewer. But over his past two starts he has given up nine runs and four homers over 9 1/3 innings.

Right-hander Shawn Armstrong gave up two homers and three runs over two innings. Tanner Scott gave up a homer to the first batter he faced in the seventh.

The Orioles allowed nine home runs in this series. They've given up 11 the past three games and 24 in the last eight. They've permitted 95 home runs in 40 games at Oriole Park.

For the 10th time this season, the Orioles have allowed five or more home runs. Baltimore surpasses the 2016 Reds at nine for the most games in major league history in which a team has allowed at least five. And they broke that record in 80 games.

Jonathan Villar hit a two-run homer for the Orioles, a 430-foot shot in the fourth that cut their deficit to 4-3. Pedro Severino hit a solo homer in the sixth.

Franmil Reyes hit two homers and drove in three for San Diego, now 40-40. It was his fifth career multi-homer game.

But the Orioles got swept in the brief two-game set and will take Thursday off before they host Cleveland on Friday night. Lefty John Means is expected to come off the injured list and re-enter the rotation that night.

Third-round pick signs: During today's game the Orioles announced the signing of their third-round pick, LSU center fielder Zach Watson. He was taken with the No. 79 overall pick and the slot value for that selection is $780,400. MLBPipeline.com's Jim Callis reported that Watson signed for that exact amount.

This year for LSU, Watson hit .308/.378/.468 with 17 doubles, seven homers and 42 RBIs during his junior season.

The day he selected Watson, Orioles executive vice president and general manager Mike Elias told me this about him: "Zach Watson, we've been watching for a couple of years. He was draft-eligible (as a sophomore) last year. He decided to stay at LSU and play for Team USA that summer. He's a really unique player. He's extremely fast. Runs 4.15 to 4.20 down the line, which plus-graded. And is a really natural, excellent center fielder. But he has some pop in his stick and produces high exit velocities and occasionally will hit some home runs. I think he had between seven and nine homers or thereabouts every year in the SEC. And he's hit for average. He's done it in the SEC and on the Cape. A guy that can play center field that well will be given every opportunity to climb the ladder."

The Orioles have now signed 32 of their draft selections, and they've gotten their picks from every round through 28, except for unsigned picks from rounds 11 and 13.
