O's put up 10 early runs to complete sweep of Pirates

To see a player drive in five runs in one game is pretty rare. Before tonight, the Orioles had one player do it this season when Matt Wieters knocked in five on April 16 at Chicago. Tonight they had two players do it in one game as the Orioles beat Pittsburgh 12-6 in front of 29,995 at Camden Yards to sweep the three-game series. Both Wieters and Steve Pearce had five-RBI games tonight in a game where the Orioles roughed up their one-time ace, Erik Bedard, for seven runs and eight hits over 3 1/3 innings. It marked the second time in club history the O's had two players with five RBIs apiece with the other coming June 13, 1999 at Atlanta. That night, Cal Ripken drove in six and Will Clark brought home five in a 22-1 win over the Braves. On Thursday, the Orioles scored four runs in the first inning for their biggest opening frame of the year, and added one in the third and five in the fourth as they took a 10-0 lead after four innings. In the opening four frames, they went 11-for-23 at bat with five doubles and a homer while scoring nine of the 10 runs with two outs. Wieters and Mark Reynolds each finished with four hits. Reynolds added his fifth homer of the year, three runs scored and two RBIs. Pearce, Chris Davis and J.J. Hardy each had two hits. Davis scored three times. Winning pitcher Tommy Hunter had a strange night. He retired the first 12 batters on just 35 pitches and then gave up five runs on seven hits over the next two innings. This was the O's first three-game sweep of an interleague series since June 25-27, 2010 against Washington in Baltimore. It is the Orioles' ninth interleague sweep all-time and they are 7-2 this year against the National League. Now 37-26, the Orioles hit the road to face Atlanta and the New York Mets. They have won five in a row, seven of nine and are 8-3 since they went through a 2-9 stretch. The five-game winning streak matches a season best, first accomplished from May 1-6 and then again from May 15-19.
