O's rally from five runs down, but Milwaukee rallies to win in 10th

That one went from stirring comeback win to walk-off loss.

Tied 6-6 in the last of the 10th, the Orioles elected to have pitcher T.J. McFarland intentionally walk Mark Reynolds with two outs and none on. Then pitcher Yovani Gallardo pinch-hit and ripped a double to left center to produce a 7-6 Brewers win.

Down 6-5 in the ninth, Milwaukee tied the game on Jonathan Lucroy's two-out infield hit to third base, when Manny Machado's throw pulled Chris Davis off the bag.

Until the last of the ninth, it looked like the O's would come from behind to win for the second day in a row at Miller Park. They trailed 5-0 after four innings.

After an error helped keep the door open in the top of the sixth with Baltimore down 5-3, Steve Pearce kicked it in with a three-run pinch-hit homer off Matt Garza for a 6-5 lead.

With one on an out earlier, Milwaukee shortstop Jean Segura fielded a hard-hit ball off the bat of Nick Hundley, but his flip to second base to try and start what would have been an inning-ending double play was off the mark for an error. One out later, Pearce hit his fourth homer and it gave the O's the lead.

The Orioles' last pinch hit homer came off the bat of Luke Scott on April 18, 2011. Since re-signing with the Orioles at the beginning of May, Pearce is batting .339 with three doubles, four homers and 11 RBIs.

Garza had a one-hitter with seven strikeouts and 5-0 lead going to the top of the fifth. But Nelson Cruz hit a leadoff homer. It was No. 17 and made it 5-1. An inning later, a Nick Markakis RBI double and an Adam Jones sac fly made it 5-3.

O's starter Wei-Yin Chen lasted just five innings, allowing seven hits and five runs. He gave up three homers after he had allowed just four homers in 53 innings on the season.

Over their last nine games, O's starters have pitched to an ERA of 7.94, giving up five or more earned runs six times.

The Orioles fall to 26-24 with this loss and are now 15-12 on the road and 4-2 in interleague games. The series finale is set for 8:10 p.m. Wednesday night.
