O's rotation has gone seven games without a quality start

The Orioles lost to the Yankees last night and got their latest subpar start - this one from right-hander Dylan Bundy, the seventh consecutive game in which the O's have not had a quality start. The rotation ERA is 7.99 in that stretch.

Before these seven games, the O's rotation had recorded nine quality starts in 14 games and looked like it had turned a corner. But Bundy has allowed 11 runs in 7 1/3 innings in two starts since coming off the disabled list. This stretch also includes Andrew Cashner allowing five runs Tuesday and five games where O's starters pitched five or fewer innings.

Bundy had pitched to an ERA of 2.55 in his last six starts before that ankle injury sent him to the DL. But he has thrown outings of just 3 1/3 and four innings in his past two games. Has returning from the DL been tougher for Bundy than he thought it would be?

"I mean, yeah, the results show that, but it doesn't feel like it has been," he said. "I felt great today. Thought my stuff was really good. All four pitches, I thought, were quality."

The Yankees posted a 9-0 win last night and outscored the Orioles 28-13 in a four-game series that the Orioles split by posting two one-run wins, one in walk-off fashion. The Orioles are 6-22-2 in series play and New York is 22-5-5.

Second baseman Jonathan Schoop had a double in four at-bats to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. Schoop is batting .415 (17-for-41) during the streak with six doubles, two home runs and three RBIs. Schoop's career-high hitting streak is 12 in row from Sept. 7-19, 2015.

The Orioles' season-long issues batting with runners in scoring position are not getting better. They went 0-for-6 last night. Over their past 10 games, they are batting .121 (8-for-66) with RISP. Over the last 18 games, they are batting .152 (15-for-99).

On the farm, Hall stands tall: The Oriole's 2017 first-round pick, left-hander DL Hall, is on a real roll on the mound these days and it continued last night as Single-A Delmarva beat Charleston 6-0. Hall threw six innings, allowing just two singles with no walks and eight strikeouts. He improved to 1-5 with an ERA of 2.54 and picked up his first career win. Hall's innings have been limited in his first full season, so he has often not thrown the five innings needed to qualify for a win. But he did this time.

Hall now has a 15 2/3-inning scoreless streak and has allowed just one earned run in 26 1/3 innings over his last six starts. That's an ERA of 0.34. This six-start stretch lowered Hall's ERA from 4.28. If he had enough innings to quality for the South Atlantic League leaders, he would rank ninth in ERA.

Delmarva shortstop Cadyn Grenier, playing in his sixth pro game, produced a three-run double for his first career RBIs. Delmarva got solo homers from Zach Jarrett and Ryan Ripken in improving to 47-40 for the season and 12-8 in the second half. The Shorebirds are in first place.

Shortstop Adam Hall, no relation to DL Hall, went 3-for-4 last night in short-season Single-A Aberdeen's 6-1 win over Brooklyn. Over his past three games, Hall is 6-for-11 with three RBIs. Gray Fenter allowed one run over five innings to get the win.

The Orioles' Rookie-level Dominican Summer League team won a pair of 1-0 games over the DSL White Sox on Wednesday. Doubleheaders are seven innings in the minors and the DSL O's pitched a seven-inning no-hitter in the opener. Right-hander Jose Gomez went six innings with seven strikeouts to improve to 3-0 with an ERA of 1.59. Right-hander Jose Alejandro pitched the last inning for his fourth save. At 23-11, the DSL Orioles (.676) are tied for the second best record in the league.

In the Triple-A All-Star game last night, the Orioles' DJ Stewart went 3-for-3 with three singles, two runs and an RBI. The Pacific Coast League beat the International League 12-7. Triple-A Norfolk's Drew Dosch went 0-for-1 as a reserve and Jimmy Yacabonis was on the International League team, but did not pitch.

The East and West played to a 4-4 tie in the Double-A Eastern League All-Star game. For the West team, Bowie's Ryan Mountcastle went 0-for-2 and Martin Cervenka was 0-for-1. Lefty pitcher Luis Gonzalez went 1 1/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Lefty Keegan Akin threw a scoreless inning with a walk and two strikeouts.

The Orioles' 2018 third-round pick, Arkansas right-hander Blaine Knight, is expected to eventually be assigned to Aberdeen, but may not pitch many innings this summer. Knight, who signed a $1.1 million bonus last Friday, played with Arkansas all the way to the final game of the College World Series, so he's already thrown a lot of innings for a college pitcher and had a long season.

This year, he went 14-0 with a 2.80 ERA in 19 starts with 25 walks and 102 strikeouts in 112 1/3 innings. Knight was 4-0 with a 2.88 ERA in the NCAA playoffs and 2-0 with an ERA of 2.45 in two starts in the College World Series.

The O's 2018 top pick, prep pitcher Grayson Rodriguez threw two scoreless yesterday in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League in his second pro appearance. He has thrown three scoreless innings in two games without allowing a hit with three walks and strikeouts.
