O's win home run derby game

The O's offense exploded for ten runs over the 5th and 6th innings tonight, and, on an evening where the teams combined for nine homers, the Orioles took an 11-4 lead and won it, 12-9 over Boston in front of 35,164. The Birds are now 4-4 in this 12-game stretch vs. Boston and New York. The Orioles are now 3-2 on the year vs. Boston after going 2-16 vs. the Sox last season. Tonight's five O's homers is two off the club single-game record of seven. The most homers ever by the O's in a game at Camden Yards was six, done four times previously. Ty Wigginton hit two solo homers and now has eight on the season, just three fewer than he had in 410 at bats in 2009. Nick Markakis went 3 for 4 with a three-run homer and 5 RBI. He began the night with 4 RBI all year. The most runs the O's had scored in a game before tonight was eight on April 18 at Oakland. The Orioles scored six runs tonight in the 5th inning and it was their biggest inning of the year. Brad Bergesen got the win, despite giving up four runs over five innings. Daisuke Matsuzaka, who was making his first Major League start of the season, took the loss, allowing seven runs over 4 2/3. The O's can sweep Boston on Sunday at 1:35 when Kevin Millwood (0-3, 3.38) pitches vs. Josh Beckett (1-0, 7.22). According to the O's media guide, the Orioles have not had a three-game home sweep of Boston since September of 1974, although they swept four at home from the Sox in July of 1998.
