Offense comes alive, O's take series finale at Oakland, clinch winning season

Needing a win to avoid being swept in Oakland and to remain just one game out of first place, the Orioles got one as their offense produced 13 hits in a 9-5 win over the A's. The Orioles won for just the third time in 19 games since 2008 in Oakland and improved to 82-64 on the year. They sit a game behind the Yankees in the AL East and remain 2 1/2 games ahead of the Angels for the AL's second wild card berth. It almost seems a bit of an afterthought but, with this win, the Orioles officially clinched a winning season. The Orioles had scored just 10 runs total in the last four games but took a 4-2 lead today with single runs in the second through fifth innings. They added to that lead with a three-run seventh and two in the ninth. Matt Wieters hit solo homers in the second and fourth innings, and has 21 on the year. It's his third two-homer game of the season and fourth in his career. The Orioles gained a more comfortable lead with that big seventh inning, which featured a Manny Machado RBI double and an Endy Chavez two-run single. Chavez went 4-for-4. Seven different Orioles drove in runs. Starting pitcher Randy Wolf allowed a Josh Reddick two-run homer but nothing else as he worked four innings before the bullpen covered the last five frames. The Orioles are now winners of four of six, nine of the last 14, 21 of 32, and 27 of their past 40 games. They are 40-32 on the road and 37-24 since the All-Star break. They begin a three-game series Monday night at 10:10 p.m. Eastern time in Seattle with Chris Tillman (7-2, 3.39 ERA) facing the Mariners Hector Noesi (2-11, 5.54 ERA).
