Orioles acquire Paredes, Athletics DFA Jim Johnson

The Orioles announced today that they acquired infielder/outfielder Jimmy Paredes from the Royals in exchange for cash considerations and optioned him to Triple-A Norfolk.
If the name sounds familiar, it's because the Orioles claimed Paredes off waivers from the Marlins on Feb. 15, and the Royals selected him off waivers two days later. He never made it to major league camp.
Paredes, 25, batted .305/.332/.457 with five home runs and 36 RBIs in 65 games for Triple-A Omaha this season. The switch-hitter was 17-for-18 in stolen bases and has recorded 183 steals in eight minor league seasons.
In 127 major league games with Houston (2011-13) and Kansas City (2014), Paredes has batted .233/.272/.308 with three home runs, 31 RBIs and 13 stolen bases. He was 2-for-10 with two steals with the Royals this season.
Meanwhile, could reliever Jim Johnson be headed back to Baltimore?

The Athletics reportedly have designated Johnson for assignment this afternoon, and they're expected to release him if he clears waivers.
Talk about a deal that didn't work out. Johnson, acquired from the Orioles on Dec. 2 for infielder Jemile Weeks, went 4-2 with a 6.92 ERA in 38 appearances. He allowed 60 hits, walked 23 and struck out 28 in 40 1/3 innings for a 2.058 WHIP.
Johnson no longer had a role with Oakland, with manager Bob Melvin unable to find a suitable point in home games to use him. Handed a 9-2 lead last night, Johnson was charged with four runs (three earned) without recording an out, again exiting to a chorus of boos.
Johnson allowed seven earned runs in his last three appearances covering two innings, and 11 runs in his last five appearances over 4 1/3 innings.
In 17 home games, Johnson was 0-2 with a 12.21 ERA. In 21 road games, he was 4-0 with a 4.10 ERA.
Johnson saved 101 games for the Orioles over the past two seasons and has long been a favorite of manager Buck Showalter. Executive vice president Dan Duquette is searching for a late-inning reliever, though he reportedly passed on the chance to re-acquire Johnson in a trade during talks earlier this month.
Duquette traded Johnson in December rather than risk the right-hander being awarded $10 million in arbitration. The A's, in an uncharacteristic move, were willing to pay it.
Now, they may have to eat what's left of it.
